This layer is a people's lawyer, he has integrity, great listener and empathy for his client and he understand the problems at stake. He explains the law and gives options to get what you want to resolve the issues. I had a divorce case and Mr Kendal was able to put the necessary documents together to make sure my side was understood by the court. Hardworking for you is his strength!!

When it rains, it pours, and it was “storming” in my life when I called Doi & Luke Island Lawyers. I was seeking a female attorney by referral but found that she no longer worked there. Emily, who received my call, warmly suggested that I speak with Kendal Luke, who patiently listened as I explained my situation and showed real concern. It wasn’t until I shopped around and spoke with more than a half a dozen other attorneys, that I realized how fortunate I was to have found Kendal Luke on my first attempt. Every other attorney I spoke with after him I found to be abrupt, condescending and wary of answering too many questions during that first complimentary call. Kendal Luke, on the other hand, treated me more like a friend rather than a number, and was open to discussing any question I had. I felt at ease with him. He certainly stood out like a gem among the rocks. So, when it was time for me to hire an attorney, he was my obvious choice. But would he be a good attorney? Time would tell. Throughout the proceedings, which took more than a year, there were many highs and lows and even times of frustration, such as that which occurs even between the best of friends. Yet, through it all, Kendal Luke and his staff stuck by me and always treated me with value and respect. He never pressured me to compromise on my values, even when I began to waver. I also appreciated that he didn’t nickel-and-dime me, as is so common with attorneys, but was always reasonable when accounting his fees. Most importantly, during the critical moments of the case, it would be his capacity for compassion that was key to representing me well. This is what drew me to selecting him, and I really feel that I couldn’t have selected a better attorney. Now that my case has finally come to a close, I look back and am so thankful for having the team of Doi & Luke on my side. Kendal Luke and his staff often went above and beyond in various ways, so that I always felt as though I was among friends. “Island Lawyers” is a fitting name for this firm as they truly reflect the down-to-earth warmth that characterizes our islands. Mahalo nui loa, Kendal Luke and Team! I will be forever grateful.

Kendal Luke, what can we say... It's been about 15 years since we last spoke or saw him.. And today.. My wife sought him out again, for a friend this time... He remembered us!!! My wife was so excited sharing that she talked with Kendal and him being as welcoming as the first time we met. Kendal was definitely the light at the end of our tunnel. It was 15 years ago, Kendal helped us with gaining full custody of our son, my wife is his stepmom. Just to share a bit on our case, it was a custody request for joint, though my son's mother refused. My son was already living with my wife and I, and has always lived with me since he was born, with the exception of one year of his life, due to his mom getting married and divorced all in that same year. When my son was 14 years old, we sought out Kendal Luke by a referral. We presented our case and Kendal said to us "ok guys, this is gonna get ugly...real ugly. And before it gets better it's gonna get worse." We knew right then, this is our guy!! Kendal was a straight shooter, obviously he was honest, because we already knew things were ugly... In the end we got full custody of my son. And the myth of the children or child will always end up with the mother... That was out of my head forever!! The judge granted me, the father, full custody! I thank Kendal for fighting fair, always believing that we had a chance, always keeping us in the loop, and making us a friend. Kendal always kept matters in our case appropriate for my son, never ever made it one sided, although we could've, though he didn't. Kendal made sure paperwork was filed in a timely manner, court orders served in a timely manner, hearings and trial was appropriately timed. We made an Attorney Friend for Life!! Anytime we have family and or friends that have similar situations like ours.. Kendal Luke is definitely our referral. Thanks again Kendal!!

He genuinely wants to help. Throughout the entire process, he was attentive, kept me well informed, was always quick to return my emails and respond to my questions or concerns. Doi & Luke Attorneys at Law's services was worth every penny and more.

Mrs. Ing notified me that she represents employers, and was unable to assist me personally. Yet she took the time to respond to my email, and gave me a few names to call. A few of which were names with which I was already familiar with, along with a few others I was not. What will happen from this point forward, will depend on my case and the lawyer...but I am grateful that she took time out of her day to assist me.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Honolulu, Hawaii?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
