I should have reviewed Kimberly years ago when she helped my wife obtain her green card, (the path to her present US citizenship) explaining every option/risks for each, and all while making us feel at ease with her level of expertise other lawyers we had consulted prior could not match. A friend asked me this week if I knew of a good immigration attorney. I said, "she's not good, she's only the best", which prompted me to write this review. Other friends whom had used various other attorneys instead of Kimberly seriously regretted their choice based on the poor results they received despite having similar circumstances to ours. We would hire her again in a hear beat!

you will speak to in Boise and all of Idaho (and even Nevada!). Kim has worked closely on my immigration case since 2018, and I always proudly announce that she is my attorney. Kim's work is passionate and purposeful; her efforts are relentless and extremely effective. Her knowledge of the current immigration laws is impressive. Not to mention, she has the kindest personality and an adventurous heart, which helped me feel at ease when I had to share all of the traumatic events from the past to help me build my political asylum case. The immigration process isn't necessarily a breeze for many people, including me, and in moments when my anxiety drives me crazy, Kim always has a detailed answer to every single one of my million questions. She is very responsive, and I know she is always there to help because of her commitment to making this world a better place. A couple of years after we submitted all the documents, my case got approved, and my green card application is coming up next. The last time I visited Kim's office, my immigration-related anxiety was completely gone. Kim has proved to be a fantastic immigration attorney over and over, which made me completely stop worrying about my future in this country. I will be forever thankful to Kim Schaefer at Schaefer Law Firm for all the effort she put in to help me live my wonderful life here in the United States.

I’m very pleased with Schaefer Law firm. Kim and her team did an outstanding job representing me for my permanent green card application. Before I met Kim, I had interviewed several other immigration lawyers but as soon as I talked to her, I knew I had found the right one. It is difficult to tell a stranger about the abuse you have been victim of, yet Kim calm and quiet demeanor made me feel safe and secure. I trusted her immediately and it was a huge relief for me to know that I could rely 100% on her to work on my side. Kim guided me through the whole process of self petitioning and built a very strong case based on domestic violence. We had a lot of evidence to document the abuse but the way Kim presented the case made all the difference. The USCIS granted me the permanent green card under extreme cruelty. I would recommend Kim for her professional ethic, integrity, professionalism and responsiveness.

I consulted with Kimberly Schaefer a few weeks ago. Not only is she professional and polite, she is also very detailed when she is working for you. She makes sure you fully understand your options verbally and visually. She is one of the most honest attorneys I have met. I have spent over $8,000.00 on immigration attorneys and she is the only one that made sure what my options were and why. It took me a while to find her and a lot of research to know she was trustworthy. It is just that, with me experience with other attorneys it is difficult to really give another attorney an opportunity. With her it was different and she really cares about the people. I recommend to try her first.

I have had the opportunity work both Thomas and Jordan on a number of matters - resolving issues with my late mother's estate; our own estate planning; a property development negotiation; exploring the idea of starting a 501(c)3 non-profit; and ultimately forming a for-profit LLC. In every case I have received clear, objective guidance, and they have helped me understand the issues. When they've needed to research issues they have done so quickly and with incredible follow up. Moreover, this is a group on very kind and empathetic people, and that's not just the attorneys, but also their support staff -- Tess has some of the best follow-up skills out there, and is very friendly and professional. And to add to that, the firm also supports various non-profit causes. I am confident using Atkins Law as my law firm on both personal / family and business matters. Highly recommend!!

Thomas helped me with a relatively complicated tax situation and I am completely satisfied. He responsive, knowledgeable, professional and proficient. There are not many lawyers in the valley that know tax issues as well as Thomas. If you’ve got tax problems, you will want him in your corner.

Tore has been my attorney through two failed toxic marriages. She's knowledgeable, tough, and a loud loud voice for children when they can't be heard, when the other side see's Tore has become your attorney they want to run for the hills and hide under a rock and as Tore would say do some primal screaming. If you have the truth on your side and you have Tore you win period it's that simple!

Jeff helped me with a custody, child support case. He was easy to talk to and have me the peace of mind that everything would be ok in a very hard time. I appreciate his honesty. I never want to go through something like this again, but if I do, Jeff is who I would want to fight with me.

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Boise, Idaho?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
