JOSH WAS AWESOME!! quoted me a retainer that was slightly less than what I'd been getting quoted at other places. He got my things done quickly and was even able to give my back some of my retainer. He also got me more money than I was asking for.

Mr. Townsend was a terrible divorce lawyer. He never returns emails. He submitted our divorce papers and they were denied and tried to charge us more money for his incompetence. We decided to go with another lawyer. That lawyer charged us $740 to fix Mr. Townsends mistakes. Hire him as your lawyer if you want someone that does not return calls or emails. Oh...and by the way. I have a coworker that used him as well. Says the same thing.

When Mr. Townsend took on my child custody case I was at the end of my rope. My ex-husband had my daughter against my will and court order for over a year. I didn't know where to turn. Within weeks of having this lawyer take my case, I got to see my daughter for the first time. Within a month see was back in my home. My ex even got the treatment he needed for his alcohol addiction through court order. What he has done for my daughter, for my family....I owe him more than money can buy. But his rates where extremely fair to boot! I highly recommend Mr. Townsend to anybody looking for an awesome lawyer with heart. You won't be disappointed trust me.

If I hadn't of had Josh as my attorney I would of been broke from my ex-wife . She tried to work me over by taking more than 50 50 custody , and tried to combine both my incomes from my part time job and main job. She didn't get but my main job income used for child support and I kept 50 50 custody. My kids and Myself aren't going to be starving and cold when they were with me trying to pay my bills to live and pay child support. I don't mind paying child support what so ever but being fair was all I wanted. JOSH TOWNSEND is by far the only attorney I would recommend. He is cursed with memory and can recall my kids names birthdays and my case after 7 years past. We were in court again battling recently and he helped me again with a support modification after some discoveries where found we kept the modification fair and reasonable. Thank God for Josh he's a great attorney.

Mr. Van Valkenburgh represented me in a matter regarding my professional license. His willingness to understand, first the history and second the technical aspects of the case were outstanding. His experience and thoroughness in gathering the documents and preparing testimony, both mine and other witnesses was complete. I would highly recommend Jack for anyone seeking legal advice in this area.

I highly recommend both Jack Van Valkenburgh and Sam Johnson for legal representation, particularly if you have been falsely accused, mistreated, or suffered denial of your rights at the hands of police or private businesses. We were targetted solely because of our race. We were mistreated and publicly humiliated. Working together, Mr. Van Valkenburgh and Mr. Johnson effectively pressured the police and business to settle out of court (the terms of the settlement are sealed) in a manner that properly redressed our wrongful arrests and detentions. In addition to his skilled advocacy, Mr. Van Valkenburgh stayed in good communication with us throughout the litigation. It is without hesitation that I recommend him as your attorney in legal battles against police, other governmental officials, or private business.

On January 4, 2009, I was wrongfully tased by a Fruitland Police Officer as my roommate and I removed his drunk and violent girlfriend from our house. The Officer arrived on scene and without saying a word, he pulled out his Taser and shot me! Fifty thousand volts violently ran through my body for five seconds...but that wasn't even close to being the worst part. Five days after the incident, the Officer filed "Battery Charges" against me in an attempt to cover up the tasing...and for the first time in my life I needed legal help. After a lot of wasted time and money...I simply believe my first attorney was afraid of the fight...and that's when I was referred to Jack Van Valkenburgh. Jack had the knowledge, experience and respect of the legal community which facilitated a fair judgment. More importantly...Jack got the "Battery Charge" expunged from my record. It is without hesitation that I refer Jack Van Valkenburgh to orchestrate your fight and resolve your legal issues. You won't be sorry...Jack KICKS ASS! Gary Payette, Idaho

We were referred to Amber by our financial advisor after our previous attorney retired. We had literally spent thousands on a very complicated trust. We needed to make some simple modifications, but were a bit gun shy that we might be in for another large bill and protracted effort. We were pleasantly surprised with Amber's efforts to wade through our big old trust, her professionally respectful way of telling us we could make it simpler and her approachable demeanor. She obviously knows what she is doing! Wish we had met her sooner. We would HIGHLY recommend Amber.

I first met Andrew at the Boise City Library where he was donating his time teaching community members about the estate planning process. I expressed my reluctance and fears about starting this process, but I found him so reassuring, that I contacted his office. I knew immediately that I wanted to hire him. Within a week following the class, my estate documents were all completed and signed off. That is how efficient he is. I have worked with many attorneys who were often self-absorbed and braggarts. This is not Andrew. He was well-informed and intelligent about estate planning, but did not try to bluff his way through the process. To work through my estate details, I had to confide some unfortunate and hurtful truths about my family. His compassion was evident, and he skillfully helped me to move forward with the planning. He is a managing partner at Gravis Law and exemplifies the tagline -- Law: Uncomplicated. I really appreciated his ability to explain complicated processes in layman's terms. He had a ready answer for all of my many questions. I found the price to be very reasonable too. Without hesitation, I recommend Andrew for all estate planning.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Boise, Idaho?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
