Rick provided tender care for us when we went in to meet with him. For years, my husband and I have dreaded heading into the whole estate planning maze. It just seemed so problematic and overwhelming with our kids and their particular needs. He immediately lifted the burden of fear from our hearts and enabled us to see the process in a positive, loving light. We already have the most amazing peace of mind, thanks to his excellent teaching and reassurance.

My wife Norma and I have known Rick Law and his family, personally and professionally, for over 35 years. We know Rick is a person of great character and the highest integrity. Most importantly...he cares about his friends, family, community and his clients. This is the reason we have selected Rick and Law ElderLaw to assist us in creating our estate plan. Another wonderful benefit of working with Rick is that he has a gift for explaining very complex estate planning concepts and strategies in simple terms that are much easier for us to understand. Rick and his firm are also experts in Elder Law planning, which to us is a very critical piece to consider in any estate plan - regardless of the 'size' of the estate. We highly recommend Rick Law and Law ElderLaw for your consideration.

My husband received the unexpected diagnosis of Younger Onset Alzheimer Disease when he was 58. We were devastated, and scared, and we didn't know who to turn to. The attorney we had been using recommended we seek an Elder Attorney to guide us down the treacherous road ahead of us. We didn't know where to turn. He recommended the firm of Law ElderLaw in Aurora, which was a good hour drive from our home. With the rest of our life hanging in the balance we decided to call. It was the smartest move we ever made. When my husband and I first went to Law ElderLaw, we were not sure what to expect but after our very first meeting we both knew we had found the man we wanted to turn our financial life over to. He involved our adult children and encouraged them to attend the meetings and speak their minds. Rick asked about our financial situation but also wanted to discover our family dynamics. Rick Law is the finest, most honorable and sincere attorney I know. He goes above and beyond what one could possibly expect. Rick is very highly respected in his field and the compassion he and his staff show is second to none. Rick's entire staff share his committment to their client's emotional and financial well being. Rick strived to legally protect our assets but more importantly to protect our emotional well being at the same time. Law ElderLaw has become known as the "Teddy Bear Attorneys" and I can't think of a better description. Rick always performs in strict accordance to the law and the highest possible moral and ethical standards. His staff are experts in their fields, from applying for Medicaid, Estate Planning, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living, Disability, Trusts, Guardianships, Education but more importantly - providing peace of mind. I highly recomment Rick Law and the Law ElderLaw Firm!

Although my case is still pending.. Zach has helped me tremendously with the most craziest requests and questions. Hes always answered every call or replied immediately with a short text he will call right back.. And he always does. Hes on top of everything, and works long and hard for his clients and their kid(s). He is understanding and tells it like it is.. A child custody fight... Is the scariest most mentally draining thing ive ever had to deal with.. And zach has been there through it with me. I highly reccomend him to anyone that is in a custody battle or divorce. Hes amazing.

Diana is wonderful to work with as is her entire firm. I most appreciate that she is professional, thorough, and down to earth. I am very comfortable with her, and trust her completely with my mother's complicated affairs. I could never have handled managing my mother's care needs on my own. My mother suffered a stroke and now resides in a nursing home; something my mother never planned for. The laws are beyond my scope of knowledge. It is a relief to have Diana and her team at Law Elder Law guide me regarding being sure my mother's needs will always be met. They remove some of the stress of caring for a loved one and are very supportive of their clients in that role. I highly recommend Diana and Law Elder Law for legal counsel and financial care planning for the elderly. And I've learned it is never too early to get one's own personal estate plan in place. Be prepared should an unfortunate circumstance come.

Kevin is an outstanding Atty, immediately and with clarity took control of the issues we were dealing with and resolved them completely, and faster than we could have ever imagined. We also have used his services to create a Trust which was perfectly prepared as well.

I have used Kevin's services many times and I must say that I am pleased to quite pleased with his work. I have used his expertise in settling past contract disputes, mediating family financial issues as well as dealing with my deplorably run homeowners association. In addition, his counsel when squaring off against local law enforcement over countless injustices has been beyond exceptional. He really has jumped into the fray, gotten inside and fought for me. I will continue to use his law services and would highly recommend him to anyone that asks.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Aurora, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
