I hired David Guy Stevens to help me out on a very complicated case and I am so happy with the results. David Guy Stevens saved me in my case. The odds were against me and we were given very little time to prepare, but Mr. Stevens knocked out of the park and I am beyond blessed of the results. I cannot thank the man enough. He was very responsive, understanding, and literally updated me on everything as the case went along. He really did fight for me and kept things honest. If you’re looking for a fighter to have your back, David Guy Stevens is your guy. I highly recommend him and he would be the first for me to call if anything were to come up ever again.

David is very knowledgeable of the new laws. He made me feel very comfortable in the decision that was made, which otherwise could have ended with jail time. I would definitely recommend his services for your legal needs.

After an unfortunate situation while a period in the EEUU I needed to find an attorney who could take care of a messy situation. A DUI resulted in probation and I needed to complete some DUI education, counseling and community service during the probation year. As a result of the DUI arrest, my VISA was revoked and I had to leave the country for good. Luckily I had enough time to complete the DUI education and counseling before leaving and the judge authorized me to do community service time in my country. When the court day arrived, after a year, I was not able to enter the country, as my VISA was revoked, and I failed to appear in front of the judge. A warrant was issued and complicated even more the situation. My original attorney kept telling me that he could do nothing about this situation and that I needed to be in the country to resolve it, what it was obviously not a possibility. That is when I contacted David Guy Stevens, from minute 0 he made me feel confident in the process. First at all he informed me that he could represent me in front of the judge without me being present in the country. He took the time to understand the case, he explained to me all possible outcomes and, most importantly, he treated me with sensibility and patience. (Exactly what I needed in such a vulnerable situation). His communication through the process was impeccable, he took care of the case in a timely manner, and the outcome was the best possible, my case was cleared and I potentially will be able to enter again the country for business. Mr. Stevens is a MAGNIFICENT ATTORNEY, he will service you with respect and sensibility. He obviously is an expert in the field and I could not be happier with the whole experience. Antonio G. R.

First time using a traffic attorney, I chose to be hired by David and his office for the traffic violation of driving while suspended/DUI. David was very knowledgeable and quick to respond with all questions or concerns I had. David is honest, reliable, professional and straight to the point. I was kept well informed throughout the whole process. I strongly recommend to everyone that comes across this particular review to search no further because David and his office are very friendly and 100% simply the best for any Criminal and DUI Defense, Divorce and personal injury needs. He was courteous and made sure I was satisfied and looking for when interested in hiring him for his services and he delivered what I was looking for. I am so thankful I came across his advertising letter in the mail. I wouldn't be writing this review without the help of him and his office. God Bless you David. It was truly an experience that cannot be replicated and I will never forget. Thank you so much. On a scale from 1-5 I give a 10 because I could not have asked for anything else. If I ever need an attorney, he will be the one I contact.

We unfortunately came across a situation with our teenage son. I just needed some advice on what to do or what could be the worst to happen to our son. Mr Stevens was wonderful in calling us on Halloween after he came home from being out with his own children. He gave us the honest truth in what could or could not happen. He even offered to be with us if needed when taking care of the matter we needed advice on. I truly appreciate his honesty and willingness to help us out. In the end everything turned out just fine! If we ever need a lawyer we know who to call. Thank you Mr. Stevens!!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Aurora, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
