I hired Jack Lai to divide my business interests among my family members and he was very helpful in bringing his experiences by coordinating both business and estate planning interests. So now I can look forward to retirement and still control the future of my business that I spent my life building. Good job!

One of family members recommended me to Jack Lai and he has been certainly a great help in keeping my business running and growing. At first, I was not certain of his somewhat young age, but he is well traveled and extremely knowledgeable of many business factors that I had not been aware of. So I always am glad to pay his hourly rate to just brainstorm and run business ideas by him. He does travel for his business clients and so sometimes, I've had to wait a few days to hear back from him due to time zone differences of his Asia trips. So I rate his responsiveness good only because of the wait. Otherwise, I would recommend him to all new business start-ups and someone like me, who is ready to retire and set up a succession plan.

I searched all over NW suburbs for an experienced and responsive business lawyer and someone recommended me to Jack Lai. His background is much better than others as he actually worked in business world before getting into law and therefore offered me much more insights than others I interviewed. He is one of very few lawyers that gives out his cell phone number and I can always hear back from him within 24 hours, if he is not traveling on business overseas. His rates are actually lower than his peers and I am sticking with him and his law partner for a while.

reasonable flat fee, always returned my calls, and I know his firm has someone I can call and he tailored my business needs. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a boiler plate form from a legal website, I would rather spend more and deal with a real lawyer instead of a computer screen.

Mr. John Redfield is one of the best attorneys I have had the privilege of interacting with as a client. He helped me at first through a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy I filed once before prior to meeting him. I had attorneys with the first bankruptcy case who were dodgy, passed my file around from one attorney to the next, kept me in the dark and then lost the case overall when I was trying to amend out amounts I did not agree with. When I filed the second time with John Redfield I had a completely different experience. He was able to help me successfully navigate a second bankruptcy while I relocated to pursue an education as a primary care doctor in a different state. I never once had to go to court for anything except one meeting, and Mr. John Redfield was there for that himself, not a legal assistant or some lay person. He is extremely knowledgeable, down to earth and accessible. These attributes are something that should be at the forefront of your mind when considering retaining legal representation. His prices are extremely fair for what you get. He does charge top dollar for his Chapter 13 defense, but it is totally worth it. He would complain about all the work I made him do for bottom dollar, but we still won the bankruptcy case. Lastly, he just secured a $45,000 cash settlement for me for an alternate matter. He is overall a fantastic attorney. Some specialize in one area, and in my opinion that is the way to go, but he is still very knowledgeable and resourceful and when I approached him concerning an alternate legal matter he took the case right away and we got top dollar overall in retrospect, even at settlement in law court with a judge at pre-trial I am still extremely satisfied. I could not have done better navigating all of this myself. Truly worth every penny in legal representation he charges, and it is a completely fair price. Thanks for all the great work. It was a pleasure interacting with you from start to finish. A true class act in legal services.

John Redfield a true, honest and outstanding attorney who does what's best for you and not looking for what a lot of other lawyers want (billable hours). I am so grateful that he took my extremely complicated case. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs a legal representation.

Mr. McMorris represented me in Federal Court in Chicago, Il. Due to his actions in this business matter, the party I sued was settled by the Insurance Company representing the defendant Mr. McMorris was instrumental in the resolve of this case. Mr. McMorris also represented a company I owned on other occasions and always did an outstanding job. I would recommend him without a moments hesitation..

We used Michael Murphy for our home purchase and again when we sold, and both experiences were great. Jolyn Schiola was our paralegal and was also Incredible to work with. She was there to answer any questions or clear up any confusion we had during the process. It gave me peace of mind to work with this team.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Barrington, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
