Susan, she was not my attorney. It was unfortunate that she was representing my opponent. First she was 25 minutes late getting to the hearing. Upon her arrival me and a family member was sitting in the hallway. Poorly dressed with high water blue jeans, ankle boots and fanny pack. I did not know she was my opponents attorney until she came out of the court room and started discussing my case with a man who was meeting with his client, made a phone call and discussed my case in front of us. Lunged at me and my family member when told her she was violating my PII and tried to intimidate us by letting us hear her call. I don't know why the judge allows attorney to treat there court room like a back yard and we pay with our hard earn money. After reading all these reviews, my opinion you can do better. If you are looking for a divorce lawyer who charges more than twice as much as a fairly straightforward divorce should cost, who provides poor to non-existent legal counsel, who is non-responsive to repeated questions/inquires (until you finally send an email indicating you are upset that you haven’t received a response), who repeats hearsay from your legal adversary back to you as if it were fact, and who takes months and months (and months!) to complete tasks that should take a few weeks - then this is the lawyer for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Ms Wilson did not fight for me at all in court. I had to secure her services via telephone because i reside in another state 900 miles away. I felt like she only worked on my case when I mentioned that I was coming to town. The day of court she was asking me did i have paperwork that i know i already submitted to her. Any information that I gave her relevant to my case she obviously did not utilize based on the judgement that was rendered. How is it that I have an arrearage in child support almost $10,000 when I have voluntarily paid ever since my child was conceived. I have paperwork to prove this too! After looking over my paperwork years later I found critical evidence that I provided to Ms Wilson but she did not present it which is ultimately the reason for the arrearage. What really got my goat was when she made a comment about me being angry over the judges decision. I quote,"I don't see what you are angry about, you got away with it for fifteen years...." referring to the amount of payment that the judge set years ago which I paid faithfully with no intentions of dodging the court system. Whose side is she on is what I asked in between all of the expletives she managed to pull out of me. Also, I drove the 900 plus mile trip to only just stand in the hallway of the courthouse and not even have a chance to talk with the judge to present my side of the story and try to remove the deadbeat dad stigma that was already upon me just because my situation has ended up in court. To be fair to her, she did tell me that I could talk to the judge, of course when it was absolutely irrelevant to the judge because he had already rendered his decision. If that was the order of business then why did I need Ms Wilson to represent me? Initially $2,000 was paid upfront and she said that she would let me know when more money was needed, well needless to say all I got was worthless repetative correspondance and an additional $800 bill when this fiasco ended. Thanks for nothing except for feeding me to the wolves with pork chop drawers on. Stay away if you know what is good for you!!!

My daughter starts at Southern Oaks tomorrow in Ky, my hometown, thanks to Andrew Rankin. I'm so nervous and excited for this change. I'm even more excited for her. More than anything, the fact that she is so happy about moving, let's me know this is exactly where we are supposed to be. Going through this divorce has been the most heart wrenching experience not just on me, but for my girls. I never imagined being treated by the man I loved for so long in such hateful and slanderous ways. 5 months ago I received a petition for divorce, alimony, sole custody, child support, and a restraining order keeping me within 50 miles of his residence when Im not even from here nor know anyone because I spent 4 years focused solely on my degree and family. Thanks to Mr Andrew Rankin, he gave me the best birthday gift yesterday, the call to tell me to go home. I have my family back despite my ex's tremendous amount of lies and manipulation. Andrew Rankin greatly surpassed my expectations. And probably deserves way more for putting up with my hormonal rants. But he was always there, answered every question, and took care of everything including the childsupport i was finally awarded after so many months of receiving nothing from the ex. He does his research, and is meticulous with his work. Now to start my life. What an amazing feeling. Thank you, Andrew.

I have known PK for about 12 years now.i would say I am exceptionally pleased with His ability.what was amazing was the honesty, integrity, and moral individual He is.He took on all the emotional baggage of mine through a divorce, and became a true friend and confidant. He has to make a living and get paid but anyone who knows Him,knows that is secondary.First and foremost was his concern for me and my children's well being. He is very intelligent as well as professional.I would recommend PK to any friend or family, and I have a number of times. My review falls short of the character and genuine good man that PK is.I could truly go on and on.

At our free consult, he ran a check on my name and found out my husband had tried to file on me out of state but it was dismissed. He then provided me with papers to file for divorce before I could even pay the retainer. As soon as I got the money together I hired him and I have not regretted it once. With him representing me, I have that peace of mind knowing my kids are protected legally.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Belleville, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
