Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced attorneys
“Ed Blake is a great attorney to work with. Goes out of the way to help wherever he can.”
2
Responsive and attentive to client needs
“Blake Behme Links Raney, P.C. is an excellent law firm and I will use them again for any legal matters that arise. I have personally dealt with Edward J. Blake, Jr. over a period of years and I believe he is an attorney with competence, integrity, and he has demonstrated to me that he is trustworthy.”
3
Excellent communication and customer service
“Blake Behme Links Raney, P.C. also prepared for me a Last Will and Testament. They explained to me that a Last Will and Testament comes into effect upon my death, when the power of attorney for health care and the power of attorney for property, are no longer in effect.”
Cons
1
Expensive and may overcharge for services
“Deceptive and manipulative in billing. Over charges for services not rendered, then replies, ' I have your money and your not getting it back, what are you going to do, sue me .' Ed Blake!”
2
Lack of responsiveness and follow-through
“I called Blake Law Group and was scheduled for a free consultation the very next day. I received information regarding my legal issue, what needed to be done, a time-frame for completion of work and an approximate amount of what the costs would be. Work was completed just how they said it would be. Very efficient law firm.”

My daughter was mauled by a dog and suffered because of the attack. The attorneys and staff at Burger Law stuck with us through a 2.5 year fight with the uncooperative dog owners. It is a huge weight that has been lifted now that everything is settled. I don't know how many times I told our team thank you for sticking with us and not giving up when it felt like we were at a standstill. They truly made a difference in my daughter's life. Thank you again.

Took them 8 years to get my settlement to me. After everything went to collections and only got me 13k, which did not cover even half of my medical bills.

Once again Gary and his team have come through for us and our lawsuit is finally settled to our great satisfaction. Gary kept us informed and made sure we understood the entire process. He and his team walked us through and explained every step. We always knew what to expect. We could not be more satisfied with our results. We highly recommend Gary Burger and his team to anyone who wants to be treated with kindness, understanting of what they may be going through and respect. Thank you, Gary, for being there when we needed you. Jesse and Nancy Griffin

I consulted with the Nelson and Nelson Law firm and Nate was assigned to my case. Mine was a difficult case because my Workman’s Comp insurance would not send me to a doctor nor was my employer helpful in my getting the care I needed. After nearly five years battling the insurance company and having to do all the healthcare on my own, it was necessary to force the hand of the insurance company. The only problem was, because my private insurance company was an ERISA plan, they had the right to claim all of my settlement to pay for my multiple surgeries. Nate was able to negotiate a fair settlement with them, which is virtually impossible to do. From the office staff to everyone in the office, they went out of their way to help to get my case settled and did not treat me as a number or just another client. I would highly recommend this office for any of your Workmen’s Comp claims.

Dan took my personal injury case and did an outstanding job. It was a complicated case with multiple defendants, but Dan stayed on top of every detail. We went to trial, and Dan's skill in the courtroom got the verdict we were looking for. He kept me informed of all developments as the case progressed and was always well-prepared. There are many options out there when it comes to representation, however Dan is a cut above.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Belleville, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
