I can agree with another review listed here. He talks up a good game and that's all. He will not return phone calls, goes MIA, tells you you don't need to show up for court and doesn't bother to give ANY details of how it went. He suggested that I bring in a 3rd party, GAL so that my kids could consult with them on how they wanted visitation. That was $1000 and he never called them in to court. Total waste of time and money.

I met with Gene for a second opinion and found him to be very transparent, helpful, and relatable. He listened well, quickly comprehended the nature of my concerns, and was gracious. He not only gave me free advise, he encouraged me to stay the course with the attorney I was using, though he had every opportunity to steer me away and sell me on his services. I left feeling very encouraged I was on the right track and I very much appreciated his help.

I hired Gene for a divorce and ongoing custody case. Initially he was fast and did a fine job. When my case became ongoing, needing assistance from him was next to impossible. He would disappear for months a time and get belligerent when I questioned anything he did or did not do. He was never aggressive for me and never advocated for me as a woman w a young child.

This attorney does not believe in mens rights, he talks a good game up front but when it comes down to it he will either tell you its best to settle because he cant discredit a GAL or he is to chicken to gonuo against a female attorney. He acts as if hes fighting for you and what you feel is in the best interest of your children but truly hes so the other side the entire time. He could see clear violations in GALs report but stated it looks bad to fight with a GAL regarding her report on the stand. Gene needs to get some guts or get out of the business. Weve already had issues with the newest court order and my ex following and he answered the first email but now all of a sudden hes mia, but the tracking on emails shows hes gotten every email and opened them and choose not to respond nor to any of the numerous phone calls hes received. Guess thisnisbthe norm for him as other posts say the same thing. Do NOT hire this man especially if you are a VET cause he could care less if you kept his butt safe for all those years you served. Your just another paycheck to him on the backs of your kids.

Working with Attorney Jim for my I-140 petition has been smooth and fast. He is on top of what he does and helps steer the process without any difficulties. Once I was able to get all the necessary documents required, all I had to do was to relax until I heard the good news from him that Congratulations after some few days. I recommend him for anyone needing a lawyer for his/her immigration petition.

Where to begin, I was seeking out for Green Card through EB2 NIW since 2022. I have contacted many firms but no one was able to help me with my case. I contacted Dunn Law firm through a referral on end of April 2024 and I received my I140 approval last week. It was a very clear and quicker pathway. They provide documents on time and responded to email in timely manner. Special thanks to Kayla, Brittany and last but not least Mr. Jim Arkell. I would refer the team to anyone who is seeking immigration assistance. 1000% satisfied with service.

Call Stu. He keeps things professional even when emotions are high and creative solutions required to get the job done. I appreciate his candid and genuine approach. He was very patient with me throughout the process. I really haven't met many others quite like him and I am so grateful I made the call. There could have been a very different outcome had I not. Thank you, Stu.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomington, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
