Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness from the lawyers, with clients feeling neglected or ignored
“VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!! UNPROFESSIONAL, UNRESPOSNIVE, LACKS COMMUNICATION SKILLS. TAKE YOUR MONEY, DONT CONTACT YOU, WHEN TRIED TO CONTACT THEM, CALLS ARE NEVER RETURNED.”

Perceived lack of effort or follow-through on cases, with clients feeling that the lawyers did not do enough to represent them effectively
“They didn't do much to help my friend. Got accused of a crime he didn't commit and got 60+ days in county after fighting for almost 2 years and it was a "he said she said" case where the accuser had next to no evidence.”

If you are an immigrant and find yourself encountering the most challenging situations in this country by meeting the trashiest people who want nothing but a way to mess up your life, look no further than Johnson Law Group. I had the privilege of consulting with Mark Johnson for my legal representation, and I am confident that his firm offers the finest legal services available. I was fortunate to be referred to Johnson Law Group by a trusted friend, and I am profoundly grateful for the recommendation. The dedication and skill demonstrated by Mark Johnson and his colleagues left me in awe, and I truly appreciate their unwavering commitment to representing me. Their outstanding legal representation exceeded my expectations and provided me with peace of mind during the most challenging time of my life. Don’t get me wrong—this case wasn’t an easy win. It involved the potential for deportation and jail time, but when they promise to “avoid jail,” they mean it. Think of Mark Johnson as Harvey Specter; and when I say Harvey Specter, I really mean it. I also want to mention Holly McCann, Mark's legal assistant, who is the real Donna. She ensures that client questions are communicated to Mark and keeps clients informed about every development in the case. Mark’s ability to anticipate potential issues and their innovative problem-solving skills were invaluable. Their expertise not only resolved my legal matters effectively but also alleviated much of the stress associated with the situation. It was evident that they genuinely cared about my case and were determined to deliver results that surpassed my expectations. They worked tirelessly to explore every possible angle and resource, demonstrating a depth of knowledge and dedication that exceeded my expectations. Mark Johnson was always available to answer questions, provide updates, and offer insightful advice, often going out of their way to ensure I felt supported and well-represented. In summary, Mark is a consummate professional who delivers not only exceptional legal expertise but also a genuine dedication to their clients' well-being. I cannot recommend them highly enough for anyone in need of outstanding legal representation. Their exceptional service and commitment to going above and beyond truly set them apart in their field

As a trial lawyer from New York with over 30 years of experience, I can say with confidence that Justi Rae Miller is an outstanding attorney and litigator and that I would hire her to defend my own financial interests. She is thoughtful, creative, aggressive and well spoken. She also is reliable--someone you can depend upon to get the job done and to achieve the goals set. Linda Joseph

Justi is a superb lawyer and professional...but that is not in my mind what sets her apart...its her understanding of our business that is critical. Also there is a lot of complex IP involved and an unusual ownership structure to manage. Her combined legal / business advice has been critical to our success.

We, an animal welfare non profit, found ourselves dealing with a spiteful, dishonest, extremely difficult previous board member to the point of needing legal advise. Kyle knew we were dealing with money constraints, as we are 100% volunteer and donation and our supporters work hard for their money and we appreciate every penny. We also did NOT want our issues to have to go as far as needing legal advice, much less legal actions, but that was out of our hands, unfortunately, when someone decided she owned a non profit and didn't have to answer to anyone for her improprieties. We reluctantly voted to consult an attorney and Kyle's was the first we were introduced to. We didn't ask, nor receive, pro bono work, but we did have to put a cap and he worked smartly and thoroughly to keep us within those limitations. He listened, understood and was always very easy to deal with and talk to. We felt at ease and confident in him from the first meeting and that hasn't changed. We did have to take actual legal action, it didn't end at a consult, and that led to a hearing. The outcome of that meeting worked in our favor, thanks to his commitment and persuasion. Even though we were a VERY small case for him, in terms of monetary conclusion, he never treated us any less than with the right mix of respect to feel important and friendliness to feel at ease. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and appreciate all he's done, is doing, and will do for our small, but feisty group!

I was referred to Mr. Korkus's firm by my insurance agent for help on a traffic matter, a serious matter that could have had a lasting impact. After meeting with me and listening to my situation, he agreed to take on my case and I am so thankful that he did! He confidently walked me through the legal process and patiently answered my many, many questions. I know for certain that my outcome would not have had such a positive ending had I not hired Mr. Korkus. Should I need legal assistance in the future, I will absolutely seek his counsel again, and will refer any friend to him as well.

I consulted with Kyle about an IT matter that had the potential to impact my business greatly. From the second I contacted him he got back to me right away and we solved the matter within a couple of hours. To help get that type of stress out of my head so I could go on thinking about my day to day stuff with a clear mind was very valuable!

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomington, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
