4
Compassionate and understanding approach
“They understood my motivations and implemented my goals without my needing to discuss them with them more than once. Divorce was a horrible experience for me, but Michelle Mosby-Scott and team kept it from being worse.”
5
Strong legal expertise and positive outcomes
“Michelle did an amazing and thorough job and was well prepared for everything that we went through. With Michelle by my side, I felt protected and knew that things would work out fairly.”
Cons
1
Inconsistent quality of service and representation
“Cases are billed and documents are prepared in a fill-in-the-blank fashion. My case was not typical and I was billed and documents prepared as if they were a typical case including items that did not pertain to my situation and documents that were not included in court filings.”
2
Lack of personal attention and involvement from the lead attorney
“Very little personal attention was given to my case, Michelle rarely showed up personally to court dates and little guidance was given.”
3
Concerns about billing practices and transparency
“Forget disputing it they threaten you right away if you try. Didn't feel like there was a "team approach" just busy work to be able to send a bill accomplishing nothing that was discussed.”

From the very beginning Jon has guided me to do what is best for all parties involved in my divorce. My divorce came as a shock. Having Jon advocate for me has been of great comfort. I know I can completely trust that he will give me sound advice and work hard in my defense. He communicates well and is always available. Divorce and custody is very complicated. Having Jon as my attorney has made all the difference to my peace of mind during this extremely difficult journey.

Mr. Koth and his team did their due diligence in assuring that my interest was protected during a real estate transaction, keeping me informed during every step of the process. Never once did i feel like i was a low priorty. This was my first experience with the firm, but I know who I will rely on to protect my rights in the event that legal representation is needed in the future.

I was referred to Mr. Malin by a VERY reputable criminal defense attorney in both McLean and Livingston Co (Illinois) whom recently retired. He assured me that Mr.Malin would be excellent council to represent me. He stated that “I would need someone who was going to be a good attorney on both ends.” Referring to McLean and Livingston Co. I was very nervous about the charges I am facing in both counties. Hours and hours of google research and YouTube videos on characteristics of a good criminal defense attorney, I was very relieved to know that I saw all them qualities in Mr. Malin. I’m very appreciative of the time and effort he has put forth in explaining everything to not only me but taking time to speak with my husband and explain to him as well. I appreciated that. I’ve not dealt with legal issues much in life until recently and I appreciated having my husband aware to help explain to me so we were all able to get a better understanding. I feel that having him for representation has been truley a breath of fresh air for my family and I during this difficult and stressful time. It certainly has helped eased a lot of stress when myself and husband feel confident with our representation and he’s been what we feel going the going the extra mile with research and compassion twords what we are dealing with. I recommend this attorney.

Justi is a superb lawyer and professional...but that is not in my mind what sets her apart...its her understanding of our business that is critical. Also there is a lot of complex IP involved and an unusual ownership structure to manage. Her combined legal / business advice has been critical to our success.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomington, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
