Andrew and Arlo were wonderful to work with! I represented the seller on a real estate transaction, and they were very professional, efficient, and easy to communicate with. They had the drive to get the job closed even though several hurdles came up during the transaction. I cannot recommend enough!

Arlo, Andrew, & Beth are great! They take the time to listen to you about what’s important to you in passing money to your heirs. They’re very knowledgeable on estate planning laws. They even know the minute differences in law between different counties in IL and what to avoid. They have a streamlined process in place which makes putting your essential estate documents in place easy. And they charge a fair and reasonable price.

I am highly disappointed in this lawyer. Simple probate for my dad's estate. He claimed that he has done hundreds of probates. Charged the estate for reviewing the paperwork necessary TO FILE THE WILL. Spent 4 hours with my family in his basement GLOOMY COLD on a zoom call for the court hearing. The judge told the lawyer that the affidavit wasn't correct and that in order to have it admitted that it would need to be resubmitted. Add another court date. To top it off my family didn't need to be there. Took off work with no pay.I had another hearing a month later and finally received the court paperwork to proceed with the administrative duties of the estate. The total cost for his mistake was around $2000. I asked him about it and his reply was that it HAPPENS. I WANTED TO BE INFORMED ON HOW THE REST OF THE PROBATE PROCESS WORKED. I was billed for THIS INFORMATION. HIS ATTORNEY PROVIDED THE wrong information. His lawyer quit a month later . There are many more issues with this lawyer. My ordeal cost my dad's estate several thousands of dollars thus far. Very deceitful about future fees and what the cost to finish the probate are. LACKS KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE ADMINISTRATION Fees for the estate executor. He told me he didn't have time to check the case law . VERY DISAPPOINTED. AVOID THIS LAWYER.

From the first time that my wife and I met with Mr. Kelly, he gave us a feeling of confidence, and my being an engineer this is something difficult to achieve with me. He listened to everything we had to say and never once gave us the feeling that there was a timer going, as with some other lawyers. He was very thorough in going over the pros and cons of doing the estate planning and what we wanted to achieve by doing this. He went over in detail everything we talked about and made sure that we understood everything. We were very impressed with his knowledge and warm and caring attitude.

I was referred to Tamara to update my revocable trust, estate plan and documents, and to assist in placing my assets into trust. Working with her was a sincere pleasure in an area where I needed expertise and guidance. Immediately, she understood the details of my concerns, discussed alternative estate planning options, and soon furnished a comprehensive set of documents for review. The process went very smoothly and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and work with Tamara. With her broad range of legal experience, I would certainly call on her in the future.

Tamara was an excellent resource for establishing an irrevocable trust. She was well organized, communicated exactly what she would do, exactly what we needed to provide and exactly what we needed to do. As a result the trust was created and funded quickly. What I thought would be a long drawn out and complex process was quite the opposite.

Stephen Scherrer is more than an attorney. In the process of protecting our intellectual property, were were introduced to Stephen. He quickly showed his understanding of intellectual property law, which you expect when you hire legal advisers, but he has demonstrated an almost uncanny amount of intellect in the technology areas of asset protection, security, encryption, authentication, telecommunications and data leak prevention. He has been an ally in the process of property protection. I would highly recommend Steven Scherrer as legal adviser and counsel for protecting your ideas, methods and inventions.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Crystal Lake, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
