The best attorneys ever! I had a ticket for failure to yield/right-of-way and was so nervous. We asked around for the best attorney in the state of Illinois. We were recommend to Cohen, Donahue and Morales. I cannot stress it enough but Mr Todd Cohen and Mrs Brittany Musleh, were the best advocates ever. They calmed my nerves right down as soon as we entered the court house. Attorney Musleh explained the situation in a very calm voice and reassured me just before we entered the court room! I’m so blessed. Thank you so much Attorney Cohen and Musleh! You guys rock!!!

Pros
1
Highly skilled and experienced attorneys who achieve excellent results for their clients
“Todd Cohen is the best attorney around. Very attentive, nice, and my case turned out better than I could've hoped for! Todd fought for my best interest and won, not only the dui got dismissed but even before my case was closed he won my license back.”
2
Dedicated, professional, and hardworking team that goes above and beyond for their clients
“There's not enough stars in the world to give this team! Brittany, Todd, and Robert are the absolute BEST in all of Illinois. From the very moment I stepped into the office Robert was able to keep all my nerves at ease- no sugar coating, no short cuts, and an incredibly detailed preparation of what was to be expected.”
3
Excellent communication and responsiveness, keeping clients informed throughout the process
“Todd Cohen is literally one of the best lawyers. You want someone who's going to get you what you need for your situation and Todd Cohen is that! He got me out of trouble multiple times. Not cheap but the peace of mind him and his team offers is well worth the money.”
4
Personable and caring attorneys who treat clients like family
“Beyond the GREATEST attorneys you could ever have!!!! If you need the greatest you need to go to Todd Cohen and his firm!!! Not only are they the best at what they do but well respected for their jobs!! I recommend them 100%!!”
5
Respected by judges and prosecutors, able to negotiate favorable outcomes
“Todd Cohen is the man you go to when trouble with the law has your world pinned down. He will bring the best he has to the battle, and he will fight to no end for your life. Very sharp, very quick, very effective, and he does not take any measure of defeat as an outcome.”
Cons
1
Expensive legal fees, not affordable for all clients
“Don't know why they have so many 5 star reviews, spent way too much on something that a public defender could have got me, potentially even a better deal.”
2
Lack of consistent communication and responsiveness from some attorneys
“Hired them for my son and in 6 months very little if anything has been done. They refuse to answer calls and hardly respond to text messages! I have never been treated or heard of anyone being treated by a lawyer this way!”

Having Carlene by my daughter's side during her first home purchase was instrumental in getting us to the closing table. Despite various issues with the HOA, Carlene negotiated new terms of the sale, providing us with the comfort of knowing we had a trusted resource on our side. She walked my daughter through the documents, explaining everything in detail as if she were her own child. I can't recommend her enough and sincerely thank her for all her efforts!

I can not recommend Carlene and her team enough to help make the process of buying and/or selling your home less stressful and even fun! Carlene and her team are highly organized, are in constant communication, and are just nice ladies to work with. Carlene's attention to detail is impressive. Our relator gave us Carlene's number and I'm so glad she did. I would recommend Carlene to anyone and everyone!

Having Carlene as our attorney was easy and tranquil. With her expertise, she gave Don and I the needed confidence and reassurance to focus and be positive on the sale of our home. We were treated as family not just a client. So blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her.

He is the best. He is caring, compassionate, patient, kind, knowledgeble, professional and most of all, intelligent. He is dedicated to help the helpless people. He has a never ending thirst to fight for justice. He is working so hard for my case(international parental child abduction). No other lawyer would have offered me the same kind of support. I am lucky to have him as my attorney.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Elgin, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
