I was wrongfully terminated from the residency training and sought legal help. Google led me to him as he offered a free phone consultation. He appeared to be caring and attentive to details at the beginning. He talked with me multiple times during the day and gained my trust. The next day, I hired him for 350$ per hour and paid a $3000.00 retainer. He sent some messages to the University Lawyer; I transferred him all my documents. Afterward, he went to the passive stage. He did not hold his promises about developing a plan of action in a given time, did not share the documents sent by the university lawyer on time, and started getting rude and threatening with "If you do not back off, I withdrew. my attorney services.", "Go elsewhere if you can find an attorney who can spend your undivided attention," "Your case is not a priority as you convey," and "I will be absent another week because I have ongoing another trial." - I requested him to leave me alone then. He did not answer my questions. Eventually, he sent me an invoice there. He stated he had already used up everything - 3K, and I still owe him $80. Unfortunately, I don't recommend him. Please be careful.

My decision to retain Barney Cohen was one of the best work-related decisions I have ever made. Mr. Cohen is an experienced, compassionate, and effective attorney.
During our interactions, I often found myself feeling as I do when I consult another medical specialist. We spoke the same language. I knew the important details, my questions all had thoughtful answers, and the relationship was grounded in trust and confidentiality.
I once believed that if I ever needed legal representation it would feel scary and horrible. I was wrong; it felt really good. I had doubts about what was happening in my workplace, so I reached out for advice. I suddenly understood the words “to retain counsel.” I found someone who understood what I was going through, and who could look at my situation objectively, then advise me. Mr. Cohen as an attorney, and a lawyer, but for me, he was truly a wise and experienced Counselor.
Although Mr. Cohen helped me with things like contracts and finances, my rights as a physician, I found that our interactions really went to the very marrow of my practice. I was in a place where I was worried and confused. I found myself on the phone with him describing facts – which he asked for – but also talking about my emotions. I expressed what it was to be disappointed in my workplace. And instead of redirecting me, or interrupting me, he really listened.
Mr. Cohen has obviously been working with physicians for his entire career. He cares about doctors, and he has a passion for what we do. He is good at his job, but has a great “bedside manner.” He was insightful and understanding, but also decisive and focused.
From the moment I retained him, everything suddenly became easier. I was unexpectedly empowered by the process.
As far as the brass tacks, everything was done and more. There were multiple logistics that I had not foreseen, that I hadn’t even imagined. But he just took care of everything. He was available 24-7. He told me on more than one occasion that he understands doctors have all kinds of hours, that he is always available. And he was.
The last—and perhaps most important— lesson I learned is that you don’t need an attorney only when you’re cornered. You can reach out for somebody just for counsel. They can guide you through turbulent waters. This is what specialists are for. We doctors all depend on one another for guidance—like spokes on a compass. Mr. Cohen is another one of these compass points.
Thank you so much, Barney, for taking a difficult and confusing circumstance and turning it into a real success for me. Obtaining your services felt like such a healthy decision. Instead of feeling lessened by a challenging experience, I feel, wiser, stronger. You took a turbulent and rocky time and turned it into something very easy. Your counsel was truly a gift.

Along the way was able to get me more money and other contract provisions changed that I wouldn't have been able to get on my own. Very patient and always made time for you. Would highly recommend!

I had the privilege of working with Barney Cohen on a number of resources for physicians on topics such as physician contracting, hospital medical staff bylaws, medical staff disciplinary actions, EMTALA, etc. I also relied on Barney for advice on how to best assist physicians who turned to our organization for general guidance on any number of aspects of their relationships with hospitals and health systems.
Barney is very knowledgeable about a wide range of legal issues affecting physicians, and he excels at identifying solutions to physicians' often-complex legal situations. I have always been particularly impressed by Barney's ability to translate legalese into easily understood bites for a lay physician audience. In short, I highly recommend Barney Cohen.

Barney supported me as in-house, corporate counsel at a major health system in Texas, when I was in the role of Administrator of a 141-bed hospital. He served as my "go to" for all legal matters, including everything from professional liability, risk management, contracts, regulatory and medical staff issues. He is very helpful and confident. Outstanding attorney!

I first met Barney Cohen when I was desperate for help and called the AMA. Barney was professional, personable, and knowledgeable. I have a disability and a hospital was trying to force me off their staff. After patiently listening to me and finding out that I am still very capable of safely caring for patients, Barney told me how I could fight that hospital.
If it was not for Barney Cohen, I would have quite practicing. Instead, about 10 years after developing a disability, I am happy and my patients are happy. Three hospital systems welcome me with open arms and I have filed an ADA lawsuit against the one still trying to force me out.
I did not even know what kind of attorney to look for. Barney helped me find an ultra-expert in the area I needed. He pointed out conflicts of interest in attorneys I had talked with. After Barney left the AMA, I found that not all attorneys at state or national medical societies are as helpful as he is.
Whether you are already in a jam or you want advice to try to prevent getting in a jam, I recommend Barney Cohen without reservations. I am truly blessed to have Barney as a member of my team.
