I had a consultation for my mother today with Paul. He is a wonderful attorney. Very kind, very personable, very helpful, very instructive. He was genuine and spent a great deal of time with us going over what our next steps need to be. I cannot express our gratitude and appreciation for his expertise in his field. If you need an attorney that truly represents his clients, please contact him. You will not be disappointed.

I gave him part of $3500 with some other people to get money from a probate case. I receive the money, but that went to another agency within the Cook County maze of departments. I went to that agency and was told that I needed a distribution letter to release my funds. Sooooooo, my part of that $3500, didn't constitute a distribution letter? Reallllly? You be the judge....

Paul was a pleasure to deal with for our initial consultation. He was very accommodating given I was remote (dial-in) and primarily facilitating the meeting between him and my father. He was compassionate, listened and quickly understood the issues and hand and gave straight honest answers and actionable next-steps. He was willing to think "out of the box" and showed a sense of urgency where it mattered. Ultimately, I think I would have been hard pressed to find someone better suited to my needs in the Chicago area. Thanks Paul! Looking forward to working with you!

I hired Paul Smolinski to handle a financially modest but legally complicated part of my deceased father's estate. Mr. Smolinski provided accurate, useful and timely information which allowed me to make the correct decisions and complete my work. Mr. Smolinski was always friendly and upbeat, along with having the perseverance to keep the process moving forward. Mr. Smolinski's fees were appropriate and never excessive. I would recommend him for estate and probate legal work.

When my dad passed away in early 2015, there were no provisions left for my mom who is in mid-late stage Alzheimer's. I took the book the social worker gave me and found Paul. I honestly can't tell you how relieved I was when I met and hired him and Palos Elder Care. I needed a fast course in elder care law on how to proceed with taking care of my mom. Paul is not your average stuffy lawyer. He is fun and caring and generous with his time and information. He has met my mom many times now, and they are friends! The first thing Paul would do before our meetings was dance with my mom! He made sure mom felt important, and if she wanted to sing and dance, he was right there with her even if it meant our appointment took longer than scheduled. I love that Paul cares about us so much. He's almost one of the family at this point! Aside from making my mom feel like a wonderful human being, Paul is incredibly knowledgable at elder care law. Everything he told me happened in the order he said it would, and I felt very confident and assured by him and his amazing staff. Everyone cares at Palos Elder Law. We were not just another case/client. Working with Paul, I gained full Guardianship of my mom even though I resided in California. I traveled every month to care for mom to ensure the best was being done for her. Paul helped me through selling my parent's home, and offered me additional information about other memory care facilities in the area. (Autumn Leaves in Orland Park was absolutely amazing if you can do private pay for a while!) After securing Guardianship and selling mom's home, my next task was to relocate my mom out here to California to be by me on a full-time basis. Paul understood our need to be together geographically, and so we began the process of soliciting the court to permanently move mom to CA. Paul helped me with this every step of the way. I know my dad is extremely pleased watching over us, and he's thrilled Paul was there to help me and mom! My mom is now here in CA! She is in a wonderful memory care facility 25 mins from my house! Paul and I finished my first year of accounting for mom, and he got all my petitions granted and our case is about to be closed with him in Illinois. If you are still reading, I know you care about your loved one as much as I love and adore my mom. Paul is your guy....Palos Elder Care is your law firm. You can stop your search right now and just pick up the phone and call Colleen for your appointment. You will not be disappointed. Paul & Pam will forever have a warm place in our hearts for taking an awful situation and making it easy for me to understand with successful outcomes. All my best to you, Marybeth.M p.s. Go hire Paul now!

Tricia handled the closing on a house I purchased and she did some other legal work for me. In each case she was always prepared to deliver what she promised, she took the time to explain exactly what she was doing and provided me with all of my options. She explained all of her fees up front for the work she was doing for me, in each case delivered what she promised.and there were no hidden costs! In addition, I believe that she is honest, trustworthy and will deliver what she promises.

Scott Zale handled the purchase of my first home, and I couldn’t be happier with his services. He made what could have been a stressful process feel manageable and kept me sane throughout. Scott's friendly demeanor, attentiveness, and professionalism were outstanding. When I encountered issues with my lender, Scott was instrumental in helping me navigate through them and reach a successful closing. I wouldn't have made it to the end without his support. I highly recommend Scott Zale for any real estate legal needs!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Frankfort, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
