I wanted to locate an attorney to work for me regarding a divorce. Interviewed several people initially. Susan spent time up front to explain the entire process in detail for me. The others did not really want to do this! I had no experience with this situation or any resources to utilize during this event. Once hired she stuck to my desired goal of getting the divorce completed quickly and efficiently. Things were moved along even as the opposition wanted to keep extending the time. Start to finish, the divorce was completed in eight months. I was quite pleased with her attention and efficiency regarding my specific situation.

I highly recommend Susan as an attorney. She represented me in my divorce and I was pleased with the agreement we reached with my ex. She was prompt with returning phone calls and emails. She was prepared and knowledgeable. Susan is very friendly but tough when she needs to be. She knows everybody at the courthouse from the clerks and security guards to judges. It was good to work with somebody so connected. Divorce is ugly, but Susan made it less so.

I picked Susan because she represented my friend's ex-wife and he said she was much better than the lawyer he had. She was very thorough, friendly, but was tough as well. I think in a divorce no one is going to get all of what they want, but the most important thing to me was joint custody of my kids and some holidays, none of which their mother wanted me to have. She also kept my ex from moving out of state with my kids and making it financially impossible for me to see them. I have recomended her to other friends.

I had a very positive experience with Susan Lonergan. She represented me in my divorce. I found her to be patient, kind, and extremely competent. Susan was referred to me by a friend of mine who also had excellent things to say about her. I thought the settlement she reached with the other attorney was fair, even though our situation was VERY complicated (I won't get into the details). Susan also presented at the KIDS program in Kane County, where she gave valuable information about how to deal with your kids during divorce. I really learned a lot.

I chose to work with Susan Lonergan after having a terrible experience with my divorce lawyer. She presented information in a class that was required by the state about how divorce affects children. She represented me well and gave me good advice about how to deal with my ex and my children in a way that would reflect on me in the mot positive way. I am happy with the amount of visitation time I was awarded, and as a father that can be no easy feat sometimes. I would highly recommend her.

I would highly recommend David to anyone. As I was going through an emotional roller coaster through my divorce, he answered all the questions I had, ensured I was comfortable and aware of the possible outcomes, and ensured everything was closed as soon as possible! He always communicates well, I never had to follow up. I also never felt he was simply lingering a case to rack up the hours, which I have experienced before. He is personable, yet will fight your battle. David also helped me with another matter concerning my daughter, and it was handled and closed quickly.

Dave Kozlowski helped me file a claim after I was in a car accident. He was able to explain to me the legal process involved in making such a claim - and he did so in clear, concise language easily understood by a typical person. He did not lead me to believe I would 'get rich' or that it would be a 'slam-dunk' of a case. I appreciated the honesty in my odds. I would recommend this attorney to family and friends should the need arise. He is friendly, courteous, and extremely competent.

Great Attorney!! Marios was someone I was hesitant to use as he costed more than most Attorney's. After talking to him and seeing how "Dialed-in" he is with his profession, I was not looking any further. Not only did Marios save me money by doing things faster and with more efficiency than most, but he stayed focused on what mattered to me and got my the outcome I was hoping for. Thank you Marios

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Geneva, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
