We absolutely loved working with Genevieve. She was attentive, quick to respond, and as knowledgeable as anyone could ask for. This was our second time purchasing a home with her legal counsel and we'll plan on continuing to use her every time down the road. She may be the only person I've come across who's responding to emails quicker than I am at 11PM. We can't recommend her highly enough.

Genevieve assisted us with navigating a commercial lease for our business. She was efficient, trustworthy and intelligent. She was thoughtful with following up with outstanding items to make sure we would stay on our requested timeline. Finding a studio for our business was very important to us and even more important was protecting our space and business for the next five years in that space and we felt like we truly went above and beyond to ensure we were! Thank you Genevieve!

Genevieve was the best attorney I could have asked for. It was my first experience as a homebuyer and she made the process very easy and smooth. She is very thorough in everything she does and is available to answer any questions at any time of day/night to be able to assist her clients. I would recommend her any day and she was still present to assure everything went smoothly after closing.

Meeting Joe, was the best thing I could have ever done for myself, after I was forever changed by the negligence of a doctor. He made me feel at peace, with knowing that someday, justice would be served for me, and he did. He is an attorney that has a wealth of knowledge that is amazing. He works very hard to make sure your interests are his interests. His staff is always so pleasant to talk to and work with as well. I could continue to praise him, but there is only one thing that really matters, he is truly a phone call you should make, if you have been hurt. He will do everything he possibly can to make sure that justice will be served.

There are a few times in my life where hindsight was 20-20. Looking back, one of the biggest mistakes I made was not having Dick Kates defend me in a very complicated white-collar criminal case. Dick had defended my closed down school against a class-action brought on by students, but perpetrated by greedy attorneys. Dick was quick to evaluate our situation and formulated a defense. Back in the 1990s, Dick was a bit gruff, not computer friendly or the least bit pretentious, but he worked fervently on our case for three years, getting it dismissed in federal court. He also came to our rescue when we were indicted on 32 counts by the federal government. Seeing the United States of America vs. little guy and knowing that the government wins over 95% of its cases will put the fear of God into you. Kates jumped right in immediately upon our request calling US Attorneys and federal judges. He knew for a fact that we were innocent and was fervent in his approach filing motion after motion without the use of computer technology. Unfortunately, I believed we needed the absolute best, most sophisticated, renowned litigator and law firm. Dick, the gentleman that he is bowed out, recommending an attorney who was named one of the nation's top 10 litigators by the National Law Journal. He was elected as a fellow and to the boards of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Tax Counsel and the American Board of Criminal Lawyers. He defended the likes of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, mobster Allen Dorfman, Operation Greylord Judge John Reynolds. We spent and hocked and worked for and traded everything we could to get this attorney and his law firm to defend us. Unfortunately, like I said before it was the wrong decision, and I lost everything – my credibility, my wife, millions of dollars, my homes boats cars. I was sentenced to jail for 53 months and have been paying restitution that totals almost $2 million ever since. My point is if you are looking for a great attorney, look beyond the gruff and technical abilities, look for character, knowledge, someone who's not afraid to work or stand up for you, someone who will fight in the trenches, be loyal to your cause much more than chasing the Almighty Buck. That's Attorney Dick Kates. (I wonder if I ever said thank you)

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Highland Park, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
