Ignore the negative reviews. Bob has handled my extremely long, difficult custody case very well. His style is NOT for everybody. I needed an attorney to tell me when to shut up and what to be doing (I hired him for his counsel; and that is what I get!). Yes his paralegal Shannon is rude; but honestly, she gets beat up all day by clients for all the attorneys in the firm, so cut her some slack. She is very nice in person. Bob is the new Mayor of Joliet, so he only handles a few cases and is busy. However; if you can get him, take him!

I had high expectations. Bob was highly recommended by a local judge to manage my case. He was never available. I could only reach him through his paralegal who was anything but professional. Always called (not by Bob), but by his paralegal Shannon who was outright rude! Every single time before a hearing, I was called for info that his office already possessed. After connecting with a new attorney, I realized how much Bob didn't care and was downright incompetent at being a lawyer. I hope he does better as Joliet mayor. Former police officer then lawyer, I expected more. Definitely not the case! Bob...good luck as a politician. You may be better suited for it. DISAPPOINTED!!!

I will be honest, I was a bit unsure if Bob at first reading the negative Avvo comments. All I can say is ignore them! They must have been written by some of Bob's bitter victims. The man is dynamite in court and has helped me in a very long, drawn out custody battle against a vindictive ex. I have to say, having Bob on your side gives you peace of mind. Once my ex saw how aggressively Bob would pursue my case, she became much more reasonable.

I would recommend Mr. O'Dekirk and his firm to anyone needing assistance with a family law case. His team is knowledgeable, compassionate, and they did everything in their power to get the outcome I wanted in my case. The staff in the office were friendly and always helpful in either answering my calls and questions or ensuring that I received a prompt response. I would highly recommend this firm and can say that they fought for me from day one.

Absolutely fantastic attorney.... He is very knowledgeable of family law amd represented me in a very professional manner. He got me everyything I wanted in the case. The case was reharding a change of custody for my child. I described the sitaution to him he did a full backround into the case amd the oitcome was just what I wanted. He proved that the mother of my childs boyfriend was a danger to my child he proved that her mother was unfit and he got me everything I needed regarding the case. You dont need to hire any other attorneys or even look this is the attorney for you. Him and his staff are amazing.

My divorce was harrowing, and Jordan Young kept me afloat. I was part of a very nasty divorce, and really thought I was going to lose time with my daughters, but Jordan stepped up and helped me not only survive, but eventually win more time with the kids. She was able to understand the emotional complexities of divorce, but also didn't mince words about what would or wouldn't hold water in court. It was honestly a fantastic balance of accurate legal consultation and emotional support, which as I understand it with many attorneys is a rare combination. She also didn't stand for any of the nonsense my ex tried to pull, and was the first to speak up when something was trending in an unreasonable direction. I had a less-than-useless attorney prior, and got metaphorically disemboweled by the enormous bills, especially since no progress was made. I hired Jordan, and because her billing is always fair and justified, I was able to financially weather the storm as well. I NEVER got a bill that didn't make sense. You truly couldn't ask for a more capable or helpful attorney to see you through the often ugly divorce process.

Jordan really listens to her clients and understands the emotions that come with being in family court. She always took the time to allow me to vent, before explaining what the options were legally. She cares for the children in these cases, she aligns with what is in the best interest of the child. She spent years on my case and I don’t think I would have been able to get through it without her. She is very smart and understands the law. She is extremely well spoken.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Joliet, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
