I know Lizzy personally as well as professionally. I am an attorney, but I know very little about Trusts & Estate Planning. So, when I needed professional help with regard to both of these things, I called her and no one else and I am glad I did. She reviewed everything promptly and quickly came up with potential solutions to a very messy problem that was created by other attorneys a long time ago . She keeps me up to date and informed, takes time to explain what needs explaining, is responsive and straightforward and has kept things moving along at an efficient pace. She is smart, professional, personable, honest and hard working. I recommend her highly!

I was given Lizzy's name by a friend of a friend. I didn't know her prior to hiring her. They say everyone comes into your life for a reason. Lizzy was definitely a gift. She is very professional, very proficient in the law and very ethical -all while being very supportive. She dealt with some shady characters on my behalf and she always stayed focused and on task. If it wasn't for her, what was accomplished could never have been done. My situation took years and she never gave up. I highly recommend Lizzy.

I was going through the most difficult time of my life. I hired Tiffany to work through a difficult divorce. She was well organized and prepared for my case. She walked me through every step and gave me great advice throughout the way. Following the completion of my divorce, she continues to be helpful with proper guidance and recommendations. I couldn't do it without her.

I have been working with Tiffany since 2014, pre-decree and now post-decree. She is supportive, responsive and most-importantly, she reminds me remain calm under extremely stressful conditions. I trust her advice because I know in the end that she is looking out for me and my children. In the courtroom, she is highly respected by her peers. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a family law attorney, and I am very lucky to have her as mine.

Tiffany was extraordinarily helpful, and honest with her counsel regarding my very contentious divorce and post-divorce. She guided me through a very difficult time, providing me with information and advice to get me and my family on the other side. At times, it was communication I did not want to hear, but she kindly, compassionately and carefully shared with me information and advice. I am very grateful she was in my corner. I cannot recommend her enough as a divorce/family attorney.

I highly recommend Valerie to anyone in need of a family law attorney. She is not only incredibly knowledgable, she is fierce and confident, yet kind, patient, and understanding. She knows what she is doing and never for one second did I feel worried while my case was in her hands. I interviewed several family law attorneys, and will continue to utilize her for any legal needs pertaining to my divorce/custody issues. We went on a 21 month journey together and she took care of me the entire way through. Thanks again Val,

Valerie jumped in to help me with my divorce after I previous attorney did not do the job correctly. She corrected many things and was extremely professional, kind and very easy to work with. When she said she would call she did. If she was late she had someone call to tell me. When I spoke with her she was patient and never rushed me. She is smart as a whip and knows everything there is to know about divorce. She also knows how to explain it to you so you understand the legal language. She is also extremely detailed and does not leave out anything. I can't say enough about her.

I started working with Val in the later part of a custody disagreement; up until then I had worked primarily with her partner. I found her to be an exceptional communicator, strategic, and appreciated that she came prepared for any situation. Extremely intelligent, honest, and caring. Rare and redeeming qualities in an attorney.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Forest, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
