I have been working with Tiffany since 2014, pre-decree and now post-decree. She is supportive, responsive and most-importantly, she reminds me remain calm under extremely stressful conditions. I trust her advice because I know in the end that she is looking out for me and my children. In the courtroom, she is highly respected by her peers. Tiffany was extraordinarily helpful, and honest with her counsel regarding my very contentious divorce and post-divorce. She guided me through a very difficult time, providing me with information and advice to get me and my family on the other side. At times, it was communication I did not want to hear, but she kindly, compassionately and carefully shared with me information and advice. I am very grateful she was in my corner. I cannot recommend her enough as a divorce/family attorney.

I highly recommend Valerie to anyone in need of a family law attorney. She is not only incredibly knowledgable, she is fierce and confident, yet kind, patient, and understanding. She knows what she is doing and never for one second did I feel worried while my case was in her hands. I interviewed several family law attorneys, and will continue to utilize her for any legal needs pertaining to my divorce/custody issues. We went on a 21 month journey together and she took care of me the entire way through. Thanks again Val,

Valerie jumped in to help me with my divorce after I previous attorney did not do the job correctly. She corrected many things and was extremely professional, kind and very easy to work with. When she said she would call she did. If she was late she had someone call to tell me. When I spoke with her she was patient and never rushed me. She is smart as a whip and knows everything there is to know about divorce. She also knows how to explain it to you so you understand the legal language. She is also extremely detailed and does not leave out anything. I can't say enough about her.

I started working with Val in the later part of a custody disagreement; up until then I had worked primarily with her partner. I found her to be an exceptional communicator, strategic, and appreciated that she came prepared for any situation. Extremely intelligent, honest, and caring. Rare and redeeming qualities in an attorney.

Bridget is the best in the business! Recently she handled my grandmothers will and trust. my grandmother is 91 years old, so it was not an easy case. Bridget came to the house, assess the situation, and was very straightforward honest and knowledgeable. Best of all her heart is bigger than her house! And after it was all said and done, The follow-up was amazing. Stayed in constant contact with me and my grandmother throughout the whole process.

Bridget Walsh Hutchen has represented my family and me several times, always with a positive outcome. She evidences skill, empathy, knowledge, and perseverance. I was cited for speeding in a school zone, an offense that could have resulted in the loss of my license for six months. Bridget was effective in getting my offense reduced to just speeding so that I could receive court supervision. She seemed to be well known to court officials who treated her with great respect. On another occasion Bridget represented my family after painters contaminated our home with lead dust forcing us to vacate our home for two months and incur huge cleaning expenses. She helped us to deal with the painters' insurance company who initially seemed sympathetic. When they started to ignore us, she kept at them. Finally, she helped us decide when it was time to file suit. They paid us the thousands we deserved immediately. If Bridget had not effectively represented us, I don't think we would have seen a nickel. My husband is also a lawyer, and he joins me in highly recommending Bridget Walsh Hutchen.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Forest, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
