My direct advice: see reviews on Yelp. I don't know if these are personal friends and family leaving positive high scores but in my direct and costly experience ... 1) Closing was delayed several times with extensions needed 2) I paid for every extension 3) I didn't receive nor do I believe they acted in good faith. Deadlines consistently missed without explanation given to me, the BUYER, nor forewarning. 4) I know it's not the Chicago way because we've dealt with other Seller Attorneys on different properties around the area without these issues. 5) I cannot recommend. What should have been a 30 day closing ran 2 months if not a day shy.

2
Responsive and helpful in emergency situations
“Thank you John for helping me with an emergency!!”
Cons
1
Lack of attention to detail in reviewing contracts and tax implications
“When the condo was finally sold, he did not ask any questions regarding the tax exemptions on the property. As a result, 7 months later they came back asking for ”
2
Unwilling to go the extra mile to retain clients
“When a buyer backed out at the last minute, he did nothing to retain the escrow. We had to prod him to call and find out how a bank pre-approval finance letter could be issued then suddenly not be approved. He didn't want to go through the hassle.”

In trying to obtain a loan modification from Bank of America, and not getting any response, I was forced to hire an attorney to save our house. Ms. Crowell has been truly wonderful. She is very knowledgable in real estate and foreclosure law, extremely responsive to any questions and concerns I may contact her about by phone or email or in person, and goes beyond the call to not only keep me informed, but to give me several options that we can look at. I truly appreciate her balance of professional aggressiveness in dealing with Bank of America and their attorneys, and you can tell she really cares about the concerns of her clients. She has helped me with not only the present state of our case, but also points out concrete options based on how things might play out going into the future. Because of her additional experience in bankruptcy law, she has even spent time explaining last resort options to save our home, in case The Mortgage Company decides that it is better to just sell the property rather than approve a modification. I appreciate her thoroughness in helping me deal with a very intense and sensitive situation. I would recommend her highly.

Sticking to the facts. I appreciate all of the work that their team has done, but I don't believe that they fought hard enough for me in my case and I feel I took a loss and they failed multiple times to be prepared for court. They fall very short in preparation and diligence. I hired this legal team based on good google reviews, which now I'm thinking are mostly family and friends that left those. We had the final court date scheduled for June 15th 2024 and I took time off of work to attend this court date. Upon arrival we were told by the judge that we were unprepared and had to schedule another court date, which in turn Giannola Legal charged me for the fees accrued from this. Before this court date I asked their team if there’s anything else needed on my end to prepare for this final court date not only once but it’s something that I ask every time I speak and before I get off the phone with their team. “If there’s anything else you need from me please let me know” and/or “Is there anything else I need to do on my end for the final court date?”. I was told by their team. “Nope, you’re all good, just show up”. The purpose of hiring an attorney is to do this work and ensure that all the documents are in order for my case and court proceedings. Full disclosure, yes they gave me a heads up about the things that I need to complete early on, but that's their job, that's what I'm paying them for, it's their job to make sure we have everything we need especially before the final court date. I'm not an attorney, I do not know the rules, I believed I hired a team that would give me peace of mind that they'll make sure everything is taken care of. Working full time, mother of four, and in the middle of relocating the kids and I. They very well knew that I have A LOT on my plate. Again, that's what I hired them for. To help me. I do not agree to be held accountable and pay for an oversight that their office made and in turn had to extend this case unnecessarily. Hiring their team is supposed to give me and other clients like me peace of mind that they are doing their due diligence and ensuring that we are properly prepared for each court appearance. Their team failed to prepare and now they're asking an unreasonable ask to have me pay for this.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lemont, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
