I drove 3 hours to find out I needed an attorney to transfer some real estate. I found him to be short, rude and condescending. He would not even look at the file and said he didn't have time. Obviously I wasn't going to leave the original file and asked if he would copy it. His answer was no and asked us to leave We did and found a much better and higher rated attny.

I was hurt on the job and didnt think their was much I could do. From my consultation with Don Behle ur was so patient in explaining every option we had available and I never felt like he was just going through the motions. He really cared about my case. I would recommend Don to anyone looking for a professional opinion.

I was referred to Mr. Hoblit after my father’s attorney did not probate his will 10 years ago. I needed to sell the family home and Mr. Hoblit took the case and he seemed to expedite it so the sell of the home could go through in a timely manner. He was professional and very helpful. I recommend him to everyone!

I am writing this review because of the extremely poor service provided by John Hoblit. Actually sisnt perform is a betrwr prescription. First off, you will have to tell him the same thing over and over, when you can get ahold of him. 5 calls in 2 weeks before a return call. This happened multiple times. He filled out my discovery incorrectly after 3 meetings with him, trying to get him corrected. He will not fill out anything while you are there, thats why it was submitted incorrectly. I have terminated him for lack of effort. You will pay him for nothing. I never received any invoice describing work performed, still to this day. You WILL be put on the back burner. I have a detailed description, dates times of calls and lack of returning them. I will be filing a report to the ARDC against him. I would never use this attorney, if thats what you call that. Beware! You will be disappointed if you use this firm. There will also be a run in all the local papers around Clinton this year on his performance with more detail. Again... BEWARE!!!!!!

This guy was a real jerk, and he tried ripping me off for $5000. Do not go to him, he is the type of attorney that we all dread to represent us. I was a student at Lincoln College and I went to him because I was being accused of raping a girl. I did not do it. I ended up volunteering for a lie-detector test and the detective found my story to be legitmate versus the accuser who had many holes in her story. As it turned out, she made the accusations so she could justify cheating on her boyfriend. Nonetheless, Douglas Muck, was extremely rude, greedy, and he tried to force me to write him a check for $5000 at our first consultation!! Even the secretary was extremely rude. She mocked me for asking why there was a $150 charge for an initial consultation. I was a student! Douglas Muck is a rude and incosiderate. I have spoke with attorneys that know him and they even agree with me. I went to this guy trying to explain to him that I could never do such a horrible thing, and he tried to make me feel as if I was guilty, and that the only way out of the nightmare was to pay him a bunch of money.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lincoln, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
