Retained him to help us get guardianship of our disabled son. Paid our retainer. Everything seemed to be okay except for communication with him was very slow. Fast forward 4 yrs later, we were served papers saying we refused to pay him $84. I didn't know we owed him anything. I would have paid it! However, if you don't get a bill how do you know you owe anything. Now we owe $202 because of court cost. I've tried calling to get this paid so I don't have to take off for court. I have yet to get a response. I would not recommend him.

I would give 0 stars if possible! He “worked on” my case for years & continually blamed the other side for the issues when in reality he wasn’t doing anything! After 3+ years waiting on him, my new attorney had it taken care of in just a few months! Mr. Karpus sure didn’t have problems billing me & wanting payment for services he never provided though!

Worst lawyer I ever meet in my life. Sued my dad after he got his down payment along with my sister. So glad he is getting out of office. Don’t be in office if you sue over 10 people.

If you want delayed messages and unclear communication this is your guy. I went through hell and back making a decision with him as my attorney. Too much issues in his personal life to focus on your case. I didn’t find out about court ordered child support until a week after the court date it was ordered. I found out NOT FROM HIM, But the mother of my son. Communication is not his strong suit, he acted as if he cared but in the long run it really showed I was just another “client”.

Jay handled a few issues for me and did not overcharge. I feel that I got more for my money than with any other attorney I have hired in the past. He was very informative and went out of his way to make sure that I was kept up to date and always knew what was going to happen next. He actually made hiring an attorney a pleasant experience. I will use Jay again if anything should ever arise in the future.

Jay treats you like a human being as well as a client. He is very professional, and conducts business in a strictly professional manner. However, he levels with you as a person and dosnt have a big head or huge ego and dosnt come off as your typical scumbag blood sucking leech. Jay handled a father custody case for me and given the circumstances he handled my case exceptionally well. If i need a lawyer again in the future, Jay will definitely be my first pick. Jay did not nickel and dime me to death and the money i spent was well worth every penny. He was very professional, and leveled with me on a personal basis as well. I had sat down with over 20 lawyers regarding this case before finally choosing Jay Ferguson and am happy i made the choice to go with him. His retainer was very reasonable and i was actually refunded a large chunk of it. He used his time very efficiently and did not cost me extra money nor did he try and drag the case out and nickel and dime me to death like other lawyers will. Best bang for your buck in the area.

I found Mr. Jay W. Ferguson to be very professional, and gave me exceptional counsel. Great service for the reasonable retainer fee. He returned every phone call and answered all my questions. He obviously cared and went the extra mile in resolving my case. Even his secretary was kind and helpful. I am completely satisfied client and highly recommend Mr. Ferguson for legal representation.

This attorney is a joke never got phone calls from him the whole 9 years he had my case then after 9 years his airhead secretary send me an email saying he was retiring.. what a joke this old man is. I would not go this lawfirm if I were dying and they were the only ones that could save me! Be very careful who you choose as your attorneys stay far away from this office.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mattoon, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
