I absolutely recommend Butler, Giraudo, and Meister if you want a problem-solving attorney and a compassionate, dedicated support staff (thanks for all your help Kelly!). Tami Meister represented me in a contentious divorce and child custody case that lasted over a year and a half. Attorney Meister was thoughtful, empathetic, and went above and beyond to make herself available for any questions or concerns I had. She cares for her clients and their cases but doesn’t allow emotion to negatively impact her ability to effectively advocate for them. I appreciated that she gave me realistic outcomes for each situation we found ourselves in, even if it wasn’t what I wanted to hear at the time. I know that my case had a much more favorable outcome due to my choice in attorney and because I consistently deferred to Attorney Meister’s counsel and recommendations.

Tami was nothing but exceptional! She was always quick to response, stayed on top of my case, and got things done in a very timely matter. She is friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. She wasn't afraid to fight on my behalf when times called for it. She also saw that time was of the essence and did everything in her power to get my divorce finalized as quickly as possible so I could move forward with my life. I would HIGHLY recommend her!!

I was a wreck and had no idea what to expect from divorce. Tamara was very kind and made clear what I needed to do moving forward. She didn't waste my time or hers. I feel that hiring her was essential to my successfully navigating a very hard situation. She isn't a mudslinger or vague about what she does for her clients. I simply listened to her advice and trusted her guidance. My decision to hire her absolutely was the best one I could have made. Tamara and her entire office made me feel like I was a person not just the next case. I could never give enough thanks.

From the first initial conversation, Susan and her team have been nothing short of excellent. The team was very empathetic and compassionate about my divorce situation. She and the team took the initiative and responsibility to explain each step and the process, along with the best options for me to think about and make a decision. They were just SUPERFANTASTIC at what they do and how they treated me as a person and a client.

Susan is an outstanding attorney. She is highly responsive, detail oriented, highly empathetic, and overall a tremendous advocate for her clients. I felt very comfortable raising questions and concerns and always felt like Susan had my best interests in mind. During a difficult process, I felt very confident in Susan's abilities to represent me and all things considered, the outcomes of the case were very positive. I feel 100% sure that i chose the correct attorney for my case and would not hesitate to fully recommend Susan to anyone in need of legal services along the lines of her subject-matter expertise.

I honestly can't praise or recommend Susan Butler and her staff enough! From 2006 through 2013 we hired her to represent us in a guardianship case. In 2008, I hired her to represent me in a divorce from my ex-husband. In 2012, my husband and I hired her in his child custody case. In 2013, we hired her to represent us in our adoption case. Each time we were able to obtain the outcome we wanted for our children and ourselves. Susan is extremely knowledgeable and straight forward. She holds herself to the highest degree of professionalism, and it shows in how she carries herself in and outside of the courtroom. Her care and compassion for those she represents is beyond comparison. The care and time she puts into the cases she takes shows in her representation of her clients, and in the handling of her cases. Her compassionate and knowledgeable staff have also been amazing! Her paralegal, Denise, has heard me cry in times of struggle, but encouraged me that Susan would see us through and fight for what was right. Susan fights for what is in the children's best interest, and won't back down! We've always said she was our BEST advocate for our children, and for ourselves!!! To this day our children will occasionally ask about her, and we've taken a few trips to her office to see her. She has made a positive impact on our children and their lives, and they adore her. I can't thank her enough for all her hard work and time she put into our cases. To be completely honest, if your looking for an attorney she is the one you want beside you, not the attorney your fighting against!!!

I went to Kelly wanting to gain more time with my son. Thanks to Kelly and Lauren I was able to successfully gain 50/50 custody. The process was exhausting at times, due to the opposing counsel dragging their feet, but Kelly and Lauren were persistent and ensured that things on our end were done and they never backed down. I couldn’t be more grateful for the guidance by them, and the work they put into my situation. I’m grateful for how understanding Kelly was and how much she worked with me with my case. If I ever need assistance regarding family law, I will definitely hire Kelly and her team again.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Morton, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
