I hired Mark Bishop LLC after consultation with 2 other firms and I am very happy I did. My case was a relatively small personal injury case and in the initial consultation both Mark and Andrew took the time to explain many details and answer all my questions. During the process I mostly consulted with Andrew who was in frequent contact with me to explain legal maneuvers and advise on strategy regarding settlement/trial. The process took over a year but resulted in a successful settlement above expectations. The communication throughout was excellent and I highly recommend Andrew, Mark and the staff.

Mark handled our case very diligently. He always kept us informed and was readily available for personal meetings or phone conferences. He promptly replied to our phone messages. In every step, he explained very clearly about our case and I am very glad that our case was handled to our immense satisfaction.

On May 9, 2013 at around 11:30 pm, Janet S. was hit by a drunk driver. Janet was coming home from work. In the accident she suffered fractures to her neck and spine in 7 places. The most serious of the fractures was to "C-2" otherwise known as "the hangman's fracture" (because that is where the noose of the hangman breaks your neck). Janet suffered several other -- far less serious -- injuries as well. Our three year old car was totaled. Happily, Janet survived without debilitating damage and has only minor lingering discomfort (which also might be age-related). We asked some friends of ours from church who are lawyers if they could recommend a good and fair attorney to us as we recognized that we would need representation. The person who hit Janet was only marginally employed and had only the barest minimum of liability auto insurance that would cover a mere 20,000 of any single accident. That amount could not even cover the emergency room costs and Janet's stay in the intensive care unit. We asked our friends from church for a reference to an attorney who was experienced, responsible, and not a caricature of the "ambulance chaser" who runs adds seeking any possible ways that a law-suit could be brought against anyone. Fair play and justice are high values to Janet and John (her husband). Our friends suggested Mark Bishop, who, at the time was in the HuckBouma firm with them). They said that Mark was good, assertive, successful, fair, and highly regarded among his peers. Equipped with that heartening recommendation from trusted people, we contacted Mark and he made an appointment with us at our house, The short account of the matter is that we are most pleased with our choice and will be quick to recommend Mark to anyone who seeks legal representation in a matter such as this. Mark was very patient with us in answering our many questions. His manner was cool and unflappable throughout. He carried his considerable legal knowledge and expertise with humility and also with confidence. Both Janet and John have graduate degrees and are professional people but we were overwhelmed by the complexity of what faced us. Mark carefully laid out the various options and strategies that he thought would be most fruitful and helped us to come to a much better understanding of what we could expect in terms of obstacles, time frame, and what we could expect from him. During the course of the next 18 months Mark switched firms from HuckBouma to Roberts PC. That happened without a wrinkle (other than switching email, telephone, and mailing addresses). In all our other communications and meetings, Mark's organization and attention to detail were most heartening. We saw him pursue a proper resolution while always being thorough and calm during an anxious time for us. Mark pursued all of the avenues for a good and just settlement that were available to us and now at the end of the process we can say, without reserve, that we were very well served.

I had the pleasure of working with Mark Bishop after my husband was killed in a sudden accident. I had no idea where to start or who to trust and after my first meeting with Mr. Bishop I knew I was in good hands. He made me feel comfortable and I felt I made the right choice in him. He explained steps and options in a way I can understand and that made me feel I had hope for my case. My experience showed that Mr. Bishop was professional, on top of my case not only with timing but he also did his homework and was extremely knowledgeable on up to date and past happenings. I was very satisfied with my outcome and would highly recommend him if you are looking for someone great to handle your case.

David assisted me with a traffic matter. His courteous, prompt, and professional manner made it easy. His fees were at the top of the scale I'd be willing to pay, but he gave a discount for upfront payment. Thank you, David. I'll recommend you to anyone who needs your services.

David was great in helping my boyfriend and I close on a house. He is a very patient man and very helpful in understanding that my boyfriend preferred to email/text instead of call. During the closing process, David helped us understand how everything works in layman's terms. He also made sure to check in every now and then to see if the lenders would push through earlier, but again, David was very patient even when we were not. Overall, David Liberty is the guy to go to when you want something done. He does well in explaining everything and will make sure that you are getting what you need/want for a good reason. I thank those who introduced me to David Liberty since he is a genuine man to work with.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Naperville, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
