I could not thank her enough, she was excellent, very calming and responsive. I would definitely recommend Mary for help with navigating through your divorce, she is experienced, very smart, knows the law and will try to get your case settled efficiently, she will not try to take advantage of you and is very fair and reasonable with her fees. Highly highly recommended.

When I started my search in January of 2021 for an attorney I came across Mary's picture online.I was drawn to her and hired her.She truly was an angel to me. She never gave up and she kept fighting for me. The outcome was better that I thought it would be. I feel so blessed to have found Mary and her wonderful staff. I had many bad days and Annette helped me thru it and eased my mind. Kameron was always available when Mary wasn't. This team is very hardworking and will fight to the end for you. I will definitely recommend Mary Davis law firm again. Thank you, Mary, Cameron, and Annette

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Mary and her entire team. After interviewing multiple attorneys my husband and I knew she was the one to go with for our family law issues. Her paralegals were phenomenal, and Mary not only was excellent at communicating and keeping us informed about everything but she insightful too. We never were left wondering “what if…” she fought for my husband and our family so diligently and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. She is beyond knowledgable about all things family law and you could tell being at court with her she has great rapport with other attorneys. She makes the litigation process stress free and really goes above and beyond for her clients. If you’re in the process of looking for an attorney this is the one you should go with!

Pros
1
Excellent legal expertise and experience
“Mary is not only the best lawyer I have hired or interviewed, but she also has a unique ability to help me stay calm and centered through very emotional issues. More special, this empathy is paired with an impressive legal brain, strong negotiation skills, and courtroom litigation skills that often make opposing counsel fumble around like an intern.”
2
Compassionate and understanding approach
“Mary has a lets get this done kind of approach which my other lawyer lacked. She got right to the point and did not hesitate to file my divorce papers. Give me all the information I needed and was readily available if I had questions. Mary was exactly what I needed in an attorney.”
3
Effective communication and responsiveness
“Kam always got back to me quickly, was incredibly helpful and really helped me understand what was happening with the case. He helped me understand the motions, gave very sound advice on remaining calm and guided me through a very difficult process. His assistance was invaluable and kept me sane throughout the entire case.”
4
Fair and reasonable billing practices
“Mary's rates are fair, I never felt nickel & dimed. Of all my attorneys, she had the most fair billing practices.”
5
Dedication and commitment to clients
“Mary and her team have always made an awful situation as easy as possible. They help me, someone with no knowledge of family law, understand what is happening. For the past 10 years, they have remained committed to my case and have guided me and supported me through some very trying times.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness
“Worst attorney ever. They don't respond to emails or calls. The entire office is a joke.”
2
Potential overcharging and billing issues
“We were charged for her showing up to court and charged for her speaking to witnesses which were at court so we were double charged. Per our contract if Mary was the one who showed up we would be charged one price but a less price if it was a colleague. Once we received our final bill it was charged all at Mary's price even though majority of the time we had dealt with her colleagues. Completely over charging us.”

Jason and his colleague Vanessa work tirelessly to ensure all questions are addressed timely and thoroughly. The best way I can describe my experience is family taking care of my family. I've trusted Jason with our most intimate details for the past 5 years and I do not regret one penny spent. But don't take my word for it as I am a stranger leaving a review, just give him a call and you will see for yourself. Jason is knowledgeable and if there is something he isn't sure of, he always gets to the bottom of it. His advice is practical, ethical, empathetic and understands the financial implications on people and does what he can to conserve your funds. Like I said, he is family.

I do not write reviews very often, however I feel this review is necessary and important for it may give anyone needing assistance from a family law firm some insight on Stern, Perkoski, and Mendez. I found myself in a high-conflicted situation in regards to my parenting time with my 10 year old daughter. I was in desperate need for counsel, and was worried about finding someone who made me feel like everything was going to be ok. I had someone recommend speaking to Attorney Shay Formanek. I was immediately surprised at how fast Shay returned my initial phone call and was blown away from her willingness to have a prolonged detailed consultation with me on the phone for free. She listened to me intently, asked all the proper questions so she was fully able to understand my concerns, my thoughts, expectations, and details of the entire situation, everything! Shay explained to me what her approach will be to resolve the situation for me, and was very transparent of all the details that anyone can possibly want to know. Upon retaining Attorney Shay Formanek, I quickly realized I found the best attorney possible. I have had several other attorneys prior being that I have been separated from my daughters mom for 8 years now. I have always felt like just another client with past attorneys, they always felt un personable, were very difficult to get ahold of, and more importantly I never felt like they cared or truly had my back. Shay immediately started working to resolve my case. Her communication is impeccable. If I reach out to Shay with a question or concern, it feels almost immediate at times with how fast she gets back to me, and it’s almost always on the phone, because she wants to discuss my concerns or questions in detail. Every single thing that is done on her end or that she receives regarding the case she immediately contacts me to discuss it and makes sure I understand what it means and where we are at in the case. I have had prior representation from several other family attorneys as I stated earlier, and this review does not do justice on how amazing my experience has been with Attorney Shay Formanek. Her knowledge as an attorney understanding family law is beyond impressive, and the way she speaks and handles herself in court is amazing. I don’t have that initial feeling of panic and dismay that I had prior to initially contacting Shay, that I know most people have while looking for counsel. She has my back and fights for me, and she’s made that very evident. I am so grateful for Shay and I know anyone else would be as well.

We used Marc to create our living trust and other necessary documents. He and his team explained everything clearly, took care of transferring our residence into the trust and even two years later, they still answer any questions we have. I would highly recommend his services. Very nice man and trustworthy.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Oak Brook, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
