I hired him for my divorce. He did virtually nothing to represent me and charged me almost $9K. I negotiated my own deal with my husband, otherwise I could have expected the bare minimum. He would have charged me 15k to do full discovery. My ex is a very high earner and yet I ended up paying my legal fees. Well, of course Roland knows my ex's attorney very well for many many years. What's worse is that Roland treated me in an absolutely degrading, condescending manner. He came as a recommendation and I so regret taking this person's recommendation. I have never in my life been treated so poorly by someone I hired for any type of service. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!

Roland was the attorney for my 2.5 year review of my divorce decree. My first attorney knew divorce law well, however was not very good with unusual circumstances and understanding financials. Roland was an excellent listener and took the time to understand and empathize with what was important to me in outcomes. He not only understood the law, but could see the areas where we could negotiate with my ex and her lawyer. He confidently told me what we had control over and what we could influence. He was very good at educating me on the law and preparing me to have realistic expectations for outcomes. In the end, Roland negotiated a deal for me through a very difficult ex and created a financial solution that everyone was willing to accept. The solution was better than what I had expected and still met the needs of my ex. I couldn't recommend Roland any more highly.

I came to Roland in high stress Order of Protection situation. I already had the OOP in place but the other party was attempting to have it modified. Roland explained everything from the beginning and never made any promises he couldn’t keep. The counsel I received with Roland was so worth the money and I would hire him over and over again if I needed to. He knows the laws and knows how to explain those laws to help everything make sense. His counsel was so outstanding the other party ended up backing down before the judge. I am so grateful I found Roland and would definitely recommend him to anyone needing an attorney.

Divorce can be one of the most challenging times in your life. Roland set realistic expectations from the very beginning and executed superbly every step in the process. Not only was Roland my attorney, he became a coach, counselor and kept me grounded throughout the difficult judicial process. He is highly regarded amongst his peers which I discovered was invaluable. His tenacity and attention to detail made for a successful outcome in my situation. I am so glad Roland was on my team versus the other side.

Roland Ernst has handled 3 post divorce issues for me. He was recommended to me by 3 different friends who had glowing comments about their experiences. Communication was timely and thorough. Mr. Ernst is an extremely skilled attorney and was instrumental for favorable resolutions to my issues. I always felt that Mr. Ernst explained issues to me in an easy to understand manner. Even though the issues were emotionally charged and financially based, Mr. Ernst kept the process on track to achieve the best possible outcomes. I am so grateful to have used his legal expertise.

I was spinning around in circles trying to get a specific answer for an estate issue for my elderly mom. I kept googling Best Chicago estate lawyer and called a few places that gave me evasive answers and were unable to tell me exactly what I needed. Somehow I stumbled upon Heather Voorn. She provided me with the candid and transparent answers I needed for my issue. But speaking with her was not just a quick consultation with an attorney. She was talking to me from a position of being a kind and caring human being above and beyond the legal nature of my situation. She was detailed, considerate, and spelled out what I can realistically expect and/or not expect. And this is exactly the kind of attorney that is rare to come by. I would highly recommend her to anyone in the Chicagoland area that needs a top estate and elder law attorney to handle simple and/or complex estate planning needs.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orland Park, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
