I was looking for an attorney to help with an Adult Adoption and I happened across Ms. Patton’s website. I contacted Ms.Patton who in turn walked me through all the steps regarding the adoption process. I knew right then and there she was perfect attorney to get my daughter’s adoption done! It took approximately one month from the beginning to end. We can’t thank you enough Ms.Patton! Our family is now complete and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Denise Patton was excellent, profession, compassionate, understanding, and straight to the point with our adoption case. Always was available either by phone or email night or day (due to our schedules). She is one of the most hard working honest attorneys that we have ever done business with. Denise knew every detail of our case and was always prompt, organized, and ready for court and/or trial. She was very dedicated to our family during the 10 months that she was working with us. We could not ask for someone more special and dedicated to our family.

My wife and I first contacted Denise a couple years ago as we got on track and into the process of a domestic adoption. Denise was very prompt in her responses to our questions, encouraged us, and was very friendly with each contact. We decided at that time that Denise was definitely our go-to adoption lawyer. Fast forward a couple years, and my wife and I were anxiously waiting for the birth of our adopted son via an ideal open adoption situation. We had befriended both birthmom and birthdad, and our agency, social workers, and Denise were all wonderful. As we got into the tangle of legal documents and procedures, Denise helped us at every step and was extremely detail-oriented. For example, her instructions and guidance for our court appearance left no stone unturned. It was a welcome piece of communication from her and included dress, family attendance, camera and phone policy in court, waiting area, where to park, how to get there, the importance and sensitivity of being on time... the list goes on. For an adoptive family, for whom the process is likely to be the first time (like us), this was most appreciated. Our adoption was finalized without a hiccup. A month later we received new birth certificates, but the state made several errors on them. Though we had paid Denise a long time before and were well "off-the-clock", Denise promptly told us what we needed to do. We followed her directions, and a week later we had newly issued and correct birth certificates. Now, several months later, as difficult and as much work, time, and effort as it all was, we look back and think, "Ah, that wasn't so bad." Our experience, in total, took a long time, probably much longer than the average adoption, but our experience and outcome were next to ideal. My wife and I both have no doubt that our selection of Denise was the right choice. We highly recommend her to any adoptive family for legal counsel and assistance. Thanks again, Denise!

We found Mrs. Patton on Yahoo, I sent an email, with the specifics of our adoption, she responded promptly and advise the steps we needed, sent her a deposit all documents, within weeks we had court. The process was so much easier and less stressful than what we thought. Mrs. Patton has excellent knowledge on the adoption process. We highly recommend her and greatly thank her for making our adoption stress free.

Used Mr. Sam Garnello for a real-estate HUD condo transaction for my son. Sam is one of the best lawyers I have used. To buy a HUD home, a special understanding of the whole process is required, from offers to closing, and all the issues in between. Sam has demonstrated a high proficiency and understanding off all the pit falls and issues that arise in a HUD purchase.

I have been working with Kurt off and on over the past few years on existing child/custody issues. He has been fair, reasonable, responsive and very knowlegeable about the law and court in Palatine. I had worked with 2 other lawyers prior to Kurt and one seemed focused on generating more anger towards my ex-wife while the other was OK but not particularly responsive. Kurt told me the facts, how he believed they would be interpreted and tried his best to keep all communications with my ex as professional and neutral as possible. I would certainly reccomend him to anyone focused on the best possible end-results rather than a temper tantrum.

Chose him to help you with your next real estate deal. He goes above and beyond the call of duty. He negotiated every step and was extremely patient with an elderly woman. He even helped her with a legal family matter. While others who purchased in the same building had trouble with the builder, we did not because he caught things in their contract and corrected it before we closed. Our neighbors were charged double and their attorney did nothing but sign papers and get paid. Jerry did an amazing job. Thanks so much! We will hire him again when we sell.

He helped my family with several real estate issues including closings, dealing with developers, and even did quite a bit of estate work for us. He was a godsend! His fees are very reasonable. He is the best attorney that I've worked with and I've worked with quite a few!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Palatine, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
