Cons
1
Perceived bias towards the state in some cases

2
Lack of time and attention for individual clients due to high caseload
“Being a public defender is hard with having probably hundreds of cases to manage at one time. She doesn't have a bunch of time for one client because she has so many others at one time and at a way cheaper rate, that's what a lot of people don't understand.”

Awful lawyer, she is lazy and she will make things up just to make her job easier. She will try to go with whats easiest for her, and ignore the facts and ignore her client just to make her work day easier, even though she gets a check either way. Worst public defender I have ever had, she is unprofessional and sloppy.

I honestly would give a negative number as a rating for her and her father if it was possible. Extremely rude, unorganized, take no time to even have a two minute conversation with their own clients and act like they work for the State's Attorney instead of who they are "representing." It has been over a year and I have yet to have a full 5 minute conversation with either of them and I get told each court date that they don't have time for me and neither have even been in the building when I have been scheduled to meet them in their office. Their is false information and a false alias on the State's Attorney's paperwork, as well as on the Public Defender's paperwork, and my attorney/attorney's office say that's not their problem. The alias and I don't have the same bday as each other, don't have the same tattoos, don't have the same name as each other (not even close), and I have never lived where she does, the cop made untrue statements on paperwork and to myself, etc. I'm not letting it go!

What I love the most about having Elizabeth Uhrich as my attorney is the peace of mind she brings me. At most other law offices, you get to speak with your attorney during the consultation, and do not get to speak with them again until the court date. It is an awful feeling showing up in court feeling like you are not prepared and have not gotten to speak with your attorney regarding what is taking place. Beth contacts me directly and I love it. I do not have to go through anyone else with my questions but her. She is very prompt with returning my emails and answering any questions I may have. I also love the fact that even though my case is small, I feel like my case is important to her. She really knows her stuff and is on top of her game!

Heart of gratitude to Mr Tod Melton for his superior assistance from across the states…I am so deeply appreciative of your time and efforts Mr Melton . Tod was very thorough in investigating and presenting honest facts in a timely manner. He is professional, respectful ; yet kind and compassionate …I felt understood and validated as he listened to the bundle of confusing concerns I presented him. Having already spoken to multiple attorneys, litigators ect ….Mr Melton flexed to meet my needs , being out of state with an “in-State “ matter rather than turning a blind eye … His advice brought me a peace of mind, comfort and hope to move forward THANK YOU TOD ! You were a huge blessing to me and my family …I cannot say enough …

I was traveling with my boyfriend to Edwardsville when we got in a minor car crash, I thought I was fine but I had a lot of neck pain after the incident. A friend referred Pignatelli and Associates since she had the same experience and they did a great job on her, so I decided to hire them as well. I'm so thankful for my friend who referred me to this law firm which helped me a lot to get a settlement from my insurance that covered and reimbursed my medical bills until I recovered.

Terrible Communication, dragging my case on forever, charging premium prices for a very “Wish” style service. Lacked accountability. When being questioned on progress of case and why it’s been at a stand still they dropped me. No warning. No phone call or discussions. Dropped. After I paid an insane amount of money and they did the bare minimum.. I would never recommend Pignatelli lawfirm again. They are not the lawfirm they were 10-20 years ago. A shame the name has torn itself apart.

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rock Falls, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
