Pros
1
Excellent communication and client-centric approach
“From the first time I met her she took the time to really listen to what I had to say & what I wanted. She developed an excellent strategy & answered every question. Throughout all of this she explained every single thing to me, always taking the time to make sure I was comfortable.”
2
Experienced and knowledgeable in navigating the legal system
“As a professional, she knows how the legal system works. Ali spent time 'on the other side' as a prosecutor, which I felt gave her an inside understanding of not only how the prosecution operates, but of what judges want and look for in a case.”
3
Passionate and dedicated to achieving the best outcomes for clients
“I don't give this review with any amount of light heartedness. DCFS came and took my youngest son into state custody for over 1 year. In my heart I truly feel that if it had not been for Ali Leonard, that time would have been excruciatingly longer or worse, they may not have returned him at all. It's via her strength, her knowledge and her determination that I have my son today and my family is whole.”
4
Affordable and reasonable legal fees
“And in terms of cost, she is far more reasonable than I could have ever hoped.”
5
Genuinely cares about her clients and their well-being
“Ali took a personal interest in me and my family. She readily viewed pictures of my kids and even helped my eldest with a few decisions about college. Ali is a genuine person and she really does care.”

I literally had one of the most difficult cases known to family court with a bitter ex that made up lies and dragged me into court yearly for 16years of false allegations and manipulation to the point I almost lost my son. After 2 years of no contact I thankfully found Ali and with a few months I was able to see my son and a short time later gained full custody. The 16 year nightmare is finally over Thank you Ali from the deepest part of my heart for everything you done Highly recommend x100000000

Ali didn't only fight hard for me, she was always there when I needed her. It was never about the money. She genuinely cared about me. I failed to do my part as a client and I could still count on her. Even though the outcome wasn't in my favor that wasn't her fault. That was mine. She faught hard and honest. She was there for me. She did what I wanted. I recommend Ali to everyone. She is amazing.

I had to deal with a situation that existed in both family court as well as criminal court. Right away Ali was both informative and empathetic. As a professional, she knows how the legal system works. Ali spent time 'on the other side' as a prosecutor, which I felt gave her an inside understanding of not only how the prosecution operates, but of what judges want and look for in a case. Ali informed myself and my wife right away to initiate things like counseling and parenting classes and not to wait for that to be ordered. 1) Because you don't want to get MONTHS into your case and then have the system spring something on you that you could have been doing all that time and 2) It shows that you're pro-active in your case. She never painted a picture of unrealistic expectations and yet, at the same time, she managed to stoke the fires of hope and resolve. The above mentioned advice alone probably shaved 3-4 months off of my family court case. It's little things like that that become big things that Ali has an inside understanding of. As a person, Ali took a personal interest in me and my family. She readily viewed pictures of my kids and even helped my eldest with a few decisions about college. Ali is a genuine person and she really does care. To be frank, the court system is hell. Pick one reason or pick several, it's a sea of hell. Ali acted as a legal compass through it all. I don't give this review with any amount of light heartedness. DCFS came and took my youngest son into state custody for over 1 year. In my heart I truly feel that if it had not been for Ali Leonard, that time would have been excruciatingly longer or worse, they may not have returned him at all. It's via her strength, her knowledge and her determination that I have my son today and my family is whole. Even when my monetary debt reads zero, I will never be able to truly pay her back. Thank you Ali.

I have all good things to say about Attorney Leonard! She's a fantastic lawyer! She's extremely knowledgeable, very personable, she's very well educated and is on top of everything. She answers any questions you have promptly and will definitely find the answer if she doesn't have it. She is very compassionate and mindful of situations, however she also knows what's right and will stand up for you and represent you to the best of her ability. Ali is a wonderful person and she truly believes in and cares about people, and that is what really stuck out with me. She made a HUGE difference in my situation and I wouldn't want any other lawyer other than her representing me!! A++++++++++++

I made the mistake of going through my divorce without a lawyer, and for over 10 years my ex took advantage of me both mentally and financially. When she went over the line and physically abused my daughter, I hit my breaking point and finally began searching for a lawyer. I was terrified of court, of my ex, and how much money I was going to have to borrow to pay for proper representation. From the moment I met Ali, those fears began to subside. She was upfront about what I was facing, what she could do to help me, and what the costs could be from the very beginning. I hired her on the spot and it was the best decision of my life! Ms Leonard immediately filed motions in court and absolutely ripped-apart the original custody order. Seeing her in action in the courtroom was nothing short of amazing. She fights hard, and knows exactly how to navigate the legal system to maximize your chances of winning the rights you seek. Within a few short months, I won full custody of my daughter, state-enforced child support, and best of all my ex is no longer a threat to myself or my child. And in terms of cost, she is far more reasonable than I could have ever hoped. If youre truly looking for a seasoned fighter who truly cares about your case and situation, you cannot go wrong with Ali Leonard! She is everything you could hope for in an attorney and more. Should the need ever arise for me in the future, I would go back to her without hesitation.

I was waiting to post a review until my divorce was finalized, as I have had bad experiences with lawyers before. Couldn't be happier with her services! I was very worried going into my divorce, but Laura was straight forward, and didn't promise on anything she wouldn't be able to deliver. Her and her team guided me through the process clearly and efficiently. I would recommend her to anyone!

I have hired attorneys in the past and was left with the feeling that my voice didn't matter. Being charged for the smallest things, even making a single copy and postage to mail a letter, seemed to be more of a priority. I had the exact opposite experience with Ms. Baluch. She really listened to me, fought for what I wanted, and didn't nickel and dime me for every little thing which was appreciated. Communication with her and her staff was great and put my mind at ease during a very stressful time. I highly recommend her!

I got in touch with Attorney Ray based on his reviews and that little voice inside us all. I had a very ugly divorce that most other attorneys were afraid to take on, Attorney Ray went to work and got my ugly divorce done in short order, against a tough opposing attorney. Attorney Ray is the real deal. He is professional, to the point, very knowledgeable, and doesn't mince words, if you are looking for sugar coating he isn't your guy. But if you want an "A" game attorney, he's at another level compared to others I have worked with. His fees are more than fair, and Attorney Ray really cares. If you want it done right, see Attorney Donald Ray.

It was a pleasure having Attorney Donald E. Ray represent me in my divorce. He is a good listener, communicator and able to weed through what was actually pertinent to my case. He is direct and to the point. His rates are fair and his quote was accurate. I highly recommend him.

My husband and I went to Attorney Whitman for estate planning. She was extremely knowledgable and brought forth issues we had not considered but were glad she made us aware of. We got everything completed in a very timely matter (we were traveling to Russia and wanted this done prior to leaving and she accommodated us happily). We now have our estate in order and will return to her periodically if and when circumstances change and updating is needed. We recommend Elisa Whitman highly and without reservation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rockford, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
