I was waiting to post a review until my divorce was finalized, as I have had bad experiences with lawyers before. Couldn't be happier with her services! I was very worried going into my divorce, but Laura was straight forward, and didn't promise on anything she wouldn't be able to deliver. Her and her team guided me through the process clearly and efficiently. I would recommend her to anyone!

I have hired attorneys in the past and was left with the feeling that my voice didn't matter. Being charged for the smallest things, even making a single copy and postage to mail a letter, seemed to be more of a priority. I had the exact opposite experience with Ms. Baluch. She really listened to me, fought for what I wanted, and didn't nickel and dime me for every little thing which was appreciated. Communication with her and her staff was great and put my mind at ease during a very stressful time. I highly recommend her!

Pros
1
Excellent and hardworking attorney who fights for her clients
“Laura is extremely hardworking and truly cares about your case. Many other attorneys, with long tenures, simply don't care anymore and will nickel and dime you to death and are only there to collect a paycheck. Laura doesn't just sit idly by and just go with the flow. She works hard to fight for you and provides you with detailed information and always keeps you informed regarding the status of your case.”
2
Trustworthy, responsive, and knowledgeable
“The first thing that i would like to say about Laura is, the four things at the top of the page Trustworthy, Responsive, Knowledgeable, and keeping me informed, are all things that impress me about her.”
3
Provides excellent guidance and representation in complex legal matters
“I didn't know what could be done for me, if anything. I was afraid that the more time went by, the less of a chance I had at being awarded custody, which was the best thing for my son. I was very frustrated and mentally worn down by the time I got to Laura. She was very meticulous and left nothing to chance. I no longer felt like I was at the mercy of a legal system that was becoming more difficult to understand by the day.”
4
Cares about her clients and their needs
“She really listened to me, fought for what I wanted, and didn't nickel and dime me for every little thing which was appreciated. Communication with her and her staff was great and put my mind at ease during a very stressful time.”
5
Highly recommended by clients for family law matters
“If you are looking for a divorce lawyer, then Ms.Baluch is your Lawyer. she is a confident, friendly, professional, and serious lawyer. I went to meet with her for a preliminary consultation, by the time I left her office I had already made up my mind.”
Cons
1
Can be difficult to reach at times
“It was sometimes hard to get a hold of her, but she did always call me back.”
2
More expensive than some other attorneys in the area
“I won't lie, Laura is more expensive that many other attorneys in the area, but she is worth every penny.”

I was referred by a business associate to The Law Office of Patrick J Adams in September of 2011. Attorney Patrick (Pat) Adams was the first attorney that I have met in 30 years that actually took my team out to lunch to discuss our "business concerns and new legal requirements. He drove to our corporate headquarters and spent almost three hours discussing our unique business needs. When he said on the phone that there would be no charge for the "initial consultation" - he meant it. I have to admit, I was very reluctant to hire a firm or an attorney that does not have an office in Chicago or New York; however, after a year of excellent service and an uncanny ability to recommend the correct solution, it was an easy decision to switch to The Law Office of Patrick J Adams I would recommend Patick (Pat) Adams to any small to medium sized company with 40 to 1000 employees. Keep up the good work Pat, please open an office in downtown Chicago!

I used Mr. Janas for financial and estate planning. His expertise was very enlightening when it came to coordinating my financial plan with my estate plan. Never before had I seen someone with his knowledge and proficiency in both of these areas. Craig is clearly a few notches above the rest. His ideas for my portfolio & estate plan were cutting-edge and made perfect sense. I could clearly understand his suggestions that were very well thought out. In the end I had a financial plan that exceeded my goals, an estate plan that gave me the most control & least amount of taxes paid, and asset protection where I didn't have to worry about creditors, medicaid, nursing homes or challenges to my estate. I recommend sitting with Mr. Janas to hear his suggestions, he is a brilliant planner that everyone should talk to. Having one person (Mr. Janas) handle all of my legal, tax and financial needs drastically cut down on the costs I would have to spend with three or four different people. Now I don't have those costs of paying all those people. Also, the "team-approach" has failed me in the past when the "team" never coordinated or consulted with each other. It led to a financial, estate and tax disaster. All it took was one weak link and the team let me down. No longer, now I have the most sophisticated, educated planner in all the areas, truly an expert working in my corner. Thank you Mr. Janas.

Outstanding product and service. Very professional. I can't say enough about Mr. Janas. Polite and courteous, Craig showed us ways to protect our assets from taxes and medicaid, while also helping us plan our finances for retirement. Simply the best. Thomas R., M.D.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Rockford, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
