Bob, communicated well and would find the answers if he didn't know. Was always professional and didn't waste time he was very well prepared when we went to court and we had a favorable out come. We have used many lawyers over the years and Bob is by far one of the best and we will use him again if the opportunity presents its self again.

Robert did a very good job being my attorney in a case that was difficult. His determination in this case was key. During the case he was informing me about every single step via call and email and also every bill I received from him was very well explained. Robert is a very honest person with very good work ethic. I really appreciate his work and dedication. If someone is looking for a good attorney, RoberT Kuehl is the right person.

I was the plaintiff in a defamation case in the federal court. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with my initial attorney who was extremely expensive, disorganized, and had made some significant errors in the case. I was reluctant to change attorneys in the middle of the suit, since there was a lot that had already happened in the case. However, it became clear that I would need new representation. Mr. Kuehl was exemplary in every way. It quickly became apparent that he was smart and experienced. He was able to catch up rapidly with where the case was and to absorb the critical details. His strategies were excellent and he always reviewed them with me to solicit my input. Mr. Kuehl was also very honest and conducted himself with remarkable integrity - always making sure that while we were being aggressive in the litigation that we made sure to proceed in an ethical manner. Communication with Mr. Kuehl was always easy. He was consistently responsive to my emails and messages and it was common that he would have conversations with me after hours to accommodate my schedule. Mr. Kuehl built a very strong case against the defendant and won several key motions. Ultimately, I decided to settle with the defendant, but I am certain that Mr. Kuehl would have presented a very compelling case had we proceeded to trial. While the issues that I have mentioned above are the most important, I think that it is also noteworthy that Mr. Kuehl was very kind and empathetic toward me throughout the time that I worked with him. His fees were also significantly more reasonable than the other attorney I had worked with and than others with whom I consulted - something not easily found in Chicago. This country would be a much better place if all attorneys were more like Bob Kuehl.

Jim worked through my difficult divorce which took a few years to complete because my ex moved out of state and was hiding assets, missing appointments, etc. Even with every hurdle my ex and opposing attorney's threw at him, he remained professional and kept me informed all along the way. I came out of the situation ahead, with dignity, the majority of the property, and primary custodial custody of the children. When the new girl figures my ex out, I can make a recommendation.

Stephen is an AMAZING family attorney. This is his passion and he is extremely knowledgeable in his field. I have had a lengthy court battle that resulted in a trial. If you want someone that has a strong moral work ethic, knows the law, someone that cares about your family as much as you do, and prepares you for a win this is your guy. He has been a God send. I have a very abusive and manipulative ex and stephen took a huge burden off of my shoulders representing me. I can not thank him enough for the peace of mind he gave me. This is a very emotional process and he reassures me every step of the way.

Stephen is super responsive and does not charge an arm and a leg for the time he spends consulting with you about your case. He's thorough, efficient, and very reliable. Although he's a busy lawyer, he made me feel as though I were his only client. I'd use him again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I recently purchased our first house and couldn't have had a better experience. It was comforting to have a lawyer who took the time to explain all the complex details and couldn't have been happier with the service.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Charles, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
