Ben was recommended by our Real Estate Agent and we were very satisfied with his team and quality of service. I especially appreciated Ben's time in person when he carefully walked us through documents and answered questions. His calming tone of voice and overall demeanor is a testament to his character and values. Thank you, 23 Legal!

I chose Tom as my USCCA (United States Concealed Carry Association) representative to ensure I’d have expert support as a firearm owner if needed. Years after our initial consultation and retainer payment, I encountered a situation that concerned me and could have potentially escalated into a more serious issue. Late on a Friday evening, I left him a voicemail, not expecting a response until the following week. To my surprise, he returned my call that same evening, addressing my concerns promptly and reassuring me that the issue was manageable. By Monday, as he predicted, the matter was resolved, and my worries proved to be unfounded. While I can’t delve into the details of the legal concern, what stood out was Tom’s expertise in evaluating the situation and his accurate assessment of its likely outcome. His professionalism and swift action gave me immense peace of mind during a stressful time. Now, one word of caution: as a client, I started receiving some really interesting articles from Tom's practice—on topics spanning all aspects of his practice. Most weren’t from Tom directly but from others in his firm. One day, my wife stormed in, furious, holding my phone like it was evidence in a courtroom. “Why,” she demanded, “are there emails about divorce in your inbox?” Now, we have a great relationship, so once I explained they were from Tom's firm, tied to his retainer, we both had a good laugh. But let me just say this: if your spouse happens to be the jealous type—especially one with a flair for dramatics—you might want to give them a heads-up. Otherwise, your next legal concern might involve trying to prove your spouse's attempt to stage a “mysterious accident.”

I’d suggest doing some shopping before choosing an attorney for a DUI charge. I did not do so and went with Glasgow because of his reviews. It cost me twice as much as any one I’ve ever talked to in the same situation and often I felt he was late or unprepared for court. One time he even sent his associate to fill in for him who didn’t know my case and had to ask for a continuance because he had another conflict. He is very nice to work with and always answers your questions but I felt he takes on a lot of cases and then isn’t prepared for yours. In DUI cases especially first offenses often times your lawyer can get it reduced but I didn’t feel that he helped with any part of my case, when originally he told me I had a very solid case in his opinion. If you don’t think you will beat it, there’s not much point in hiring an expensive lawyer like him because you will end up with a guilty verdict and have to pay a ton in court fines on top of his fees in addition. The only thing he seemed to do for me was drag out the case for 4 months and blame the states side when I saw multiple times he was the one unprepared for court. Just my own opinion but I’d suggest if you’re ever in this position to get quotes from a couple lawyers then make your choice.

Jason Pappas is an excellent lawyer. He is very familiar with the intricacies of the law and--perhaps more importantly--he genuinely cares about his clients' best interests. Jason's rates are extremely reasonable, and once you hand over your case to him, you can be confident that you are in good hands.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Schaumburg, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
