Chris made my custody hearings more bearable. I'm very thankful I had a knowledgable professional guiding me through a stressful time. His representation and advice lead to a good outcome for me and my son. I appreciated his assistant Leigh's work on my case, too. They both respond quickly and answered all of my questions.

If i could give him 10 stars i would. I have never had an experience with a lawyer before so this whole process i was going through was a bit stressful. However, after my initial meeting with Chris i felt much better about everything. Chris does a fantastic job at walking through the process as a whole and breaking down pieces that might be confusing to help better understand what's going on. I obviously had a lot of questions about the divorce process and Chris did a great job at suggesting but not pushing ideas, he would say "this is what i have seen work in the past but at the end of the day you need to do what you feel comfortable with". I really appreciated that as i have heard some horror stories from friends about their experiences with lawyers. Another nice thing about Chris was that it wasn't always work talk with him, he took a genuine interest in my life outside of the case which again I'm not sure a lot of other lawyers would do. From start to finish, not once did I have a negative experience both Chris and his assistant Leigh were both always available for questions and if they weren't sure they would always get back to me in a timely manner. If you are looking for a lawyer would highly recommend Chris Sherer

I've had the pleasure of having Chris on my side a couple of times. First, Chris helped to make sure I was fairly compensated after an accident. Second, Chris helped to get my name cleared in a lawsuit. Not only did he fight to get the case dismissed, he made sure it ended quickly and with prejudice. One thing is very clear after working with Chris - he knows the law and he knows it very well. Not only that, he makes sure your're very informed throughout the whole process. He's there to answer any questions and to explain everything in a way that you clearly understand. He is also very personable and having a good personality helps take some of the stress away from the world of legalities. You can tell that he enjoys what he does and that he truly cares. All of these traits make for one heck of a great attorney and I would recommend him to anyone!

I hired Mr Sherer in 2014 to assist me with completing a very messy divorce. Long story short, I started this divorce in 2009, after a 28 year marriage and several houses and numerous other assets, and a very vindictive spouse, with an attorney who got the divorce its self done in late 2011, but didn't complete any of the division of property or other matters. And then, for reasons unrelated to my case, had his law license suspended. So I hired a new attorney, who was able to get a court ruling on the remaining issues, but then moved out of state for personal reasons before getting any of it completed. By this point, I am extremely frustrated and about to just give up. But, luckily I didn't, and hired Mr Sherer. He took on this seemingly insurmountable task, and not only cleaned up the mess the other 2 attorneys had left me in, but did it with poise, grace and sheer determination. He carefully listened to all of my concerns, gave impeccable advice, and got the job done to my satisfaction and more. I would advise anyone seeking counsel or legal representation to use Mr Sherer's law firm. He addressed each and every one of my concerns in a very timely manner with a very professional manner. He is absolutely the best, in both his calming demeanor and his legal expertise. Again, I would recommend him to everyone for all legal matters.

Richard Kim and his team (Haley and Hee) helped me buy a foreclosure property in Chicago. I usually become automatically concerned when having to deal with a lawyer and Richard managed to pass my strict check-list when I was looking for a property attorney. I get very involved in the details, and I enjoyed his tendency to provide information. He and his team earned my trust by providing very detailed and to-the-point answers. Their follow-up on the process was excellent and they covered some of the mishaps by the real estate broker. I did enjoy working with them, and I definitely recommend Richard and his team.

I had a probate situation where the executor was extremely non-responsive for more than 2 years. Mr. Stuart understood my needs clearly and took swift action to compel the executor to act. He communicated clearly about course of action as well as any and all potential fees that would apply. I do not anticipate ever needing another probate attorney in Illinois, but if I do, Mr. Stuart is the one I will call.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Springfield, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
