Was given this attorney's info through my legal insurance provider. They walked us through the process of writing our will and power of attorney completely and took the time to explain it all patiently and thoroughly. I can't recommend them highly enough and would 100% use them in the future!

My husband and I decided to establish our trust. I read reviews on-line about Jed. We contacted him and scheduled an appointment. He listened, answered our questions and spent time talking with us about establishing our estate plan, as well as a few personal matters. He provided great counsel in regards to wishes for our family. We would highly recommend Jed for those considering to establish their future estate plans. You will be grateful for his guidance.

My wife and I had been putting off our estate planning for far to long (12yrs) and finally got serious and found Jed to help us get the plan in order. The process was very smooth and Jed was patient with us as it sometimes took time to gather all the information and documents along the way. Jed was also very responsive to all my questions during the process of setting up our wills and trust and even took a phone call from my bank when they had some questions about transferring an account to our new trust. At the end of the process we were given a very nice binder with all of our information in it. I have been complimented of the quality of the how the binder was setup by people that saw it as I was working on moving my assets into the trust. Thanks again. I'll be giving you another call in the future as I need to update my documents.

Pros

2
Passionate, hardworking, and dedicated lawyers who go above and beyond for their clients
“This woman is amazing. Her drive, work ethic, knowledge of how to navigate the legal system are amazing. She makes solid factual arguments and also lends a listening ear to her clients concerns and feelings through it all.”
3
Comprehensive legal services and expertise across various areas like estate planning, business formation, and litigation
“Jedediah takes the angst out of the process due to his experience AND expertise along with his personality. His compassion and ability to 'cut to the chase' make him a lawyer I would recommend over and over again.”
4

5
Genuine, personable, and Christian-oriented lawyers who care about their clients
“I chose Jedidiah because he stood out to me out of everyone I was reading about. I read he was a Christian, that was a added bonus. He had so much patience with me. Jedidiah made sure I understood everything.”
Cons
1
Inconsistent performance and poor time management by some lawyers, leading to delayed resolutions and unnecessary court dates
“Worst lawyer ever. I would recommend to my worst enemy. He was very inconsistent, had bad time management, made me go through numerous continuous court dates because he was never prepared.”
2
Potential for fake or bot-generated negative reviews, as indicated by the lawyer's statement
“The three 1-Star reviews posted by Jay, Jason, and IAMDaBoss in the last month are not from my former clients. I do not know who these people are and they may even be the same person trying to defame me, as the language in the reviews seems similar.”

I have worked with lawyers and law students for more than ten years. I must say Brian Wright and his staff are genuine and qualified. He and his staff are very competent, efficient, and courteous while following up in a timely manner. I went to Brian because I was frustrated with another local lawyer who did not follow my written instructions in drawing up my “Will/Trust”. Brian listened to me and genuinely showed concern for the issues that had not been addressed. He revised my trust/will/estate to make sure that my wishes would be carried out. He also expeditiously and expertly handled a situation in which my son was in a very serious accident, thank God he was there for him. I highly recommend him to anyone.

We have asked for Mr. Schmack's expertise in many situations over the last few years. Wills, Real Estate, Guardianship of our grandchild, and we have asked many other questions/advice of him regarding other family situations. Mr. Schmack has always returned our calls and answered our questions within a very short time. He has been very informative and helpful in advising us. Not once has he made us feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about our situations. He is very respectful of feelings and has always taken the time to explain the laws to us, no matter how confusing they may be. We have much respect for him and appreciate him and his office manager very much. Mr. Schmack is an honorable man and we would recommend him, anytime.

Anytime I need assistance in a criminal case I need to win, I look no further than Peter Gruber. He has a brilliant legal mind and is unbelievable at thinking on his feet while examining witnesses and speaking before the jury. He is affable, personable, and an all around great person, not just a great attorney.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sycamore, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
