Pros
1
Highly professional, honest, and fair attorney
“Kathy was very professional, honest, and fair. She always told us the truth even when it wasn't what we wanted to hear and made sure to prepare us for what would be coming at us next.”
2
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“She always answered our questions in a timely manner as well. We felt as if she actually had a vested interest in our case and making our lives better.”
3
Competent in various areas of law
“Funny thing about the internet is that you can lambaste a profession with no real concern due to anonymity. I feel bad that the other posters think that of Mrs. Baker-Bowen, as she was nothing but professional and prompt in all the meetings that I attended.”
4
Provides personalized and compassionate service
“Kathy is an exceptional attorney, extended knowledge in the laws and did a great job translating legal terms into language that I was able to understand. By far she exceeded my expectations when she represented me in my child custody case. She is a compassionate, honest and caring individual and a great asset and representation of the legal profession.”
Cons
1
Potential for misrepresentation and lack of concern for clients' best interests
“She lies to her own clients to get billable hours and does not have their best interest in mind. She seems to know almost nothing about law. Extremely discourteous and toxic personality.”
2
Slow progress on cases
“Things that should take two hours take two years with this attorney.”

Kathy was very professional, honest, and fair. She always told us the truth even when it wasn't what we wanted to hear and made sure to prepare us for what would be coming at us next. There was no BS, sugar coating, or wasting our time trying for results she knew we couldn't get. She only charged us for the actual time she worked and didn't just round up to the nearest hour or half hour like most attorneys. She always answered our questions in a timely manner as well. We felt as if she actually had a vested interest in our case and making our lives better. We won our case and would recommend Kathy's services to anyone needing an attorney.

Kathy did a great job with my divorce case and mine was a difficult one to say the least. She was professional and had me prepared for anything that might come up. I would recommend her and would use again if needed.

I found Kathy Baker-Bowen in the Yellow Pages over 10 years ago when I was getting divorced. Not only did she do an excellent job, she fought hard for me and kept me in the loop as issues came up during the divorce. Since that time I have referred over 6 clients to her, all happy, satisfied clients. I have also used her again after my daughter was born to write our Will and my husband hired her to get more visitation with his son/my stepson. I wouldn't use anyone else, but her!

We hired Kathy to represent my Daughter in her Divorce case. I must admit at first I was not sure because we needed a strong attorney to represent her. and I was unfamiliar with her. Her husbands family was well known in the community. She listened, was attentive and respected what we had to say and acknowledged my daughters feelings were important. Kathy was not the first attorney that we had interviewed. We actually had to lose a significant retainer with another attorney to switch and I believe we made the right decision. She provided us with helpful information and strong guidance in what was important and what we would just have to live with. She was honest and knew how the judges would react to our case and I must say she was spot on. Even if what she told us we did not want to hear she made sure that we understood and she let us make the decisions. She argued our case by what we wanted and not what she wanted. She was clear and concise in court and was outspoken when needed. She knew her facts and made the other attorneys look unprepared and stupid to the point that the judge had to question my daughters soon to be ex husband on his decision to keep his attorney. Yes, we wanted everything and no we did not get everything but I must say in doing research we fared much better than we could have under the circumstances. I really hate attorneys and I have had the unfortunate opportunity to work with many as a part of my job but I would not hesitate to hire her again if the need arose. I know that she would be honest and do her best!

For my my divorce I used Aaron. It took 3 years. Some of my other girlfriends had used him as well, same thing. There’s only so many divorces in the area and Aarron will make the most out of it. When looking for representation, look in a bigger town.

Aaron has been my ex wife's attorney now for years of court. Basically he's a great attorney at divorce but if you want a mess of a divorce, he'll bring it. His legal guidance is less than standard and often includes hiding and not attending to business if its not in his clients favor, but life isn't a "client" its peoples lives he has no regard for. If you let him, he will drag things out. Clients of any divorce need to realize that no one "wins", its a divorce! The entire family pays the price. He's basically not a fraud, but extremely close to that line in the sand. If you have a brain and basic a divorce and you need someone close to the courthouse, he would be fine. If you have a business...stay away! His lack of business understanding or lack of interest will tank all parties in his quest for everything..in closing, he's smart but not that smart. He knows basic law, aside from that he's very weak.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Taylorville, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
