I had a hard time with Angie getting her to understand what the most important things were to me and felt many times she wasn't really give me much legal advice. Had a hard time on some occasions getting timely responses (she was gone for a long weekend or gone for a week here and there and those happened to be when I was wanting information or waiting for something to happen. She didn't seem to be able to remember my case details - putting information about a car payment that I didn't have, figures were wrong for support, etc. I found errors in a lot of things - such as the payments for my support were calculated wrong by the opposing attorney and I had to point that out to my lawyer, kids were listed wrong, details about debts were wrong. She seemed very on top of billing - but not so on top of my case. Every month I got her bill very timely (wish she was more timely with her responses to me and my calls and emails.) She was out of the office for a week or days here and there so I never felt she was available to me. Close to the end, I wasn't sure I wanted to settle my case as it had been negotiated - she told me she would drop me as a client if I decided to not take the agreement that had been negotiated as I "didn't seem to want to follow her advice and as such she wouldn't be the right lawyer to keep representing me". I would ask her in emails very specific questions, and she would not answer certain ones, and I would have to ask over and over - sometimes I just needed her to tell me when she would know something if she didn't know it at that moment but she would skip over the question. She wasn't good about explaining things - always seems to be in a hurry to get off the phone - most of our contact was through email. I felt trapped as at the end, didn't feel she cared about my case, but too close to the end to try to start with another attorney. She couldn't tell me anything about whether I should sign the quitclaim deed before I received the money for the buyout of my house. My total legal fees seems very high for the amount of work she actually did on my particular case, and I felt I did so much in explaining things, giving her everything she needed for things she could just cut and paste to make it simple for her paperwork, and having to point out errors in how things were stated in the drafts of the marriage settlement agreement a few times to get it correct. I needed more information and always felt I was researching things on my own and talking to a friend who was a family law attorney more than her when I didn't understand what she was telling me. She was very no nonsense, talked extremely fast (sometimes it made it hard for me to gather my thought to be able to remember what my question was). She may be a good fit for others, but she always made me feel as if I was asking too many questions.

Angie was very quick to answer any questions I had. Court cases can be stressful especially custody cases so it was since having someone help you feel calm. She was always one step ahead!

She represented me in my post-divorce case. She was very open, honest and very straight-forward with the facts. She was always responsive and answered all my questions in a very professional way. She fought for what was right and looked out for the best interests of my children, that was always in the forefront. I would definitely continue to recommend her to anyone I know.

Angie is an exceptional and hard working lawyer. She fights for her clients to the bitter end and will do whatever it takes to achieve the best outcome. She handled a traffic ticket for me and I did not have to worry about a thing. It is nice to have her in your corner, she is the most trustworthy attorney I have ever known. Thanks again for all that you do!

I've never had to use an attorney before. Mark was very good. He always returned calls promptly and offered good advice. He knows divorce law and child support/maintaince formulas very well. He offered all options and then would offer pros/cons of those decisions. He is a hard worker and I am happy I hired him.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Warrenville, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
