Most basic lawyer. But if you want a lawyer to fight, he is not the one. The communication was lacking. I was told at one point "you should think about self representation". This because I asked him to have stuff included within the final divorce. But he wanted it his way or else find someone else. "I work for you" doesnt really apply here. Then, I tried to follow up AFTER the case was closed so I would not need another lawyer, completely ignored be on 3 separate requests. So he was done with me without telling me. Forwarded me emails from the other party with not a single word of context or what Im supposed to do. "Review and get back to me". Yes, I probably could have self represented. And should have. Win some, lose some.

Thank goodness I finally found an attorney that represented me with integrity and helped me through this long nightmare of a divorce. Robert was very responsive from the beginning, answered every communication, kept my case on track, and gave me counsel that finally gave me some relief. Robert came in late in the case to wrap up the final stages, and he got more accomplished in one action than was done in 2 years of constant attacks. I wish I had started my divorce process with him.

Robert Stavins is very competent and effective attorney in family law. I must admit to be a lawyer-phobic so when my exwife filed a law suit to get me pay half of my sons University of Michigan tuition when he could have studied Loyola University Chicago or Marquette University for free thanks to my employee benefits, I first attempted to represent myself. When a judge strongly suggested I needed a lawyer, and some awful forms were due in Waukegan court soon, I quickly choose Robert based on two facts: first, he worked pro bono from time to time (not that I would need that but it shows his kind heart so I felt he would understand that I cannot afford excessive fees), and, second, he did not remind me during our first meeting a vulture (unlike most other attorneys I observed working in the courtroom). I was so lucky with my selection! The complicated case morphed into child support case for another child and took a year and many petitions and counter-petitions to complete. Robert was always there - calm, knowledgeable, explaining my options clearly. We did not win it all but my new family and I would be probably financially ruined without his assistance.

I met with Mr Stavins in Sept 2016 after being denied for disability, he was very straight forward with me about the difficulty with my case but was willing to fight with me. He was great about keeping in touch and what steps we were taking next. I would definitly hire him any time for anything.

Of all the attorneys I have met, retained, or come into contact with, Mr. Strathmann is the most reliable, intelligent, and hard working. He is professional, and very personable. I felt as though he genuinely cared about the outcome of my case, and not just the money he would stand to make.

Many years ago I found myself divorced and single mother. Although I really tried to make ends meet, I just keep falling behind with my bills. Before going to Robert J. Adams I I consulted with two other attorneys that I saw on TV regarding bankruptcy. As soon as I got in the door, they wanted to talk about fees and not my problems, I felt like I was being interrogated and they treated me like I did something wrong. At that time I was working two jobs and had two small children to look after and between rent, household bills and daycare I had no money to pay old credit cards and medical bills. I found Robert through a close friend of mine. It was like I struck gold, as Robert is not on TV. After consulting with Robert for one minute, I knew that he was the right attorney for me and my family. His staff was so welcoming, Robert’s experience and knowledge provided me with a level of comfort that the other attorneys did not. When my case got complicated and the credit card company filed an adversary, Robert took them to trial, and after 2 days, he won the case. That was over 12 years ago. Recently I had medical problems and after insurance, I still owed the hospital thousands of dollars. After two years of trying to negotiate with the collection companies, I call Robert. He again filed my cases and my life got instantly better. This time I got the opportunity to work with Tina, Robert's daughter and I also wanted to give her a recommendation because she did a lot of work on my case. Like her father, Tina really cares for people. I am happy that she has followed his footsteps. I highly recommend Tina to anyone considering bankruptcy. She is ready to go the extra mile

Christine (Tina) Adams is not just a BK attorney she feels like family. Every since I began working with Tina she has made this process feel more than just a case number but more of a personal situation. Its amazing how she remembers not just your name but things about your family as well. I was terrified about the entire process but working with the Robert J Adams family especially Tina and Michael made things go smooth as butter. If Life throws you a curve ball, I suggest working with a friend (attorney) like Christine (Tina) Adams!! Thanks for giving me my life back.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Waukegan, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
