Jamie Sutton guided me through the process to obtain legal guardianship for a family member. He has walked me through every step of the process, and I am highly confident in his expertise in this area as an attorney. He is knowledgeable, reliable, and courteous. In addition, he has been very patient, kind and sensitive to our family as we have gone through this difficult process. He has exceeded my expectations for legal counsel, and I cannot thank him enough. I highly recommend Jamie Sutton for legal counsel.

I knew I found the right attorney for my contentious divorce and custody case after my initial consultation with Mr. Sutton. I had another attorney at the time and while I was not displeased with their counsel, changing my representation was the best decision for me and my family. I have worked with many attorneys professionally and Jamie is a unique breed. He won’t just take a case because he knows he can make money, he has a conscience and truly believes in justice. He’s very intelligent, attentive, strategic, organized and will do his best to represent and support his clients to the best of his ability. He has always been completely transparent and forthcoming in every matter we’ve dealt with, even when I didn’t like the answer. Many attorneys will tell you what you want to hear just to keep the money coming in, not Jamie. If you need an attorney that will be your biggest advocate, he’s your man. I can’t say enough great things about him, he has truly been a blessing to me and my family throughout what has been the hardest time in our lives. The legal system can be arduous, unfair at times and very confusing, but with a great attorney by your side you can be confident that you will make it out the other side. I will forever be grateful for having found Mr. Sutton and choosing him as my teammate.

In the interest of full disclosure, I want to say upfront that I do have a personal relationship with Mr. Sutton. We have been friends since we were undergraduates together at our alma mater. I hired Mr. Sutton to help me with an ancestry and Irish citizenship matter. I was a little nervous, anticipating many bureaucratic hurdles and endless piles of paperwork. Lucky for me, the paperwork seemed to be mostly taken care of on Mr. Sutton‘s end. I have barely had to do anything other than ask questions and occasionally review and sign documents. Mr. Sutton, on the other hand, has kept me apprised of the ongoing actions within the process, gave me realistic expectations for what the process would be like, and continues to help me understand tangential legal issues. He excels at explaining a legal situation and possible solutions or outcomes (though he is really not a big fan of ‘what if’ questions. I guess most lawyers aren’t). He is also particularly gifted at strategic thinking and maintaining his calm collected rationale. Which is particularly great if you’re like me and have an aggressive form of anxiety that is constantly worrying. He is clearly intelligent, which you notice pretty much right away, and it is a huge relief to have someone this smart in my corner helping me navigate through what can be a truly Byzantine process. Do yourself a favor. Hire him.

Kendra is a true professional in her field. She has an extreme attention to detail as well as a professionalism that exudes confidence. She made the proceedings of my divorce, and child support/custody situation as painless as possible. She laid out the options and her expectations with the local courts. Kendra was spot on and all progressed smoothly. I would highly recommend Kendra to anyone facing the stress of a divorce. She is amazing and is absolutely the best.

I looked at several local Bloomington attorneys before deciding on Freitag and Martoglio. The thing that put them over the top for me is that they seemed genuinely compassionate and interested in helping my mom and I settle an estate. They communicated clearly, offered solutions that were helpful and in my mom's best interest, and unlike other local attorneys their fees were fair and equitable. Honestly they went way above and beyond for us. If you want top notch legal representation from attorneys who care about you, then this is your law firm. If you want to fund the fancy buildings and vehicles of the attorneys who represent you and get lesser representation, then pick a random phone number from the list of other estate lawyers in Bloomington and start writing checks. I definitely recommend this firm to my family and friends and to anyone reading this review.

Ms. Karen Wyle gives the legal profession reason to be extremely proud! She was recommended to me by another reputable attorney to handle my response to an appeal in 2013. Ms. Wyle was impartial, worked strictly with the facts, is competent, experienced and knowledgeable regarding the judicial process. Ms. Wyle worked efficiently and met every deadline as she composed a thorough and thoughtful response to the Petitioner's trial court appeal. She is an extremely intelligent lady who will get the job done and treat you fairly. She the epitome of integrity with regards to what a lawyer should be and seriously lives by the ethics of her profession. I would hire her without hesitation to handle any legal matter she would accept. She is/was worth every dollar spent and more.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomington, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
