I have never had to hire a lawyer in my adult life. When I needed to find a lawyer within 72 hours I panicked and didn’t know what to do. I went on google and typed in best lawyers practicing family law near me. Larry among six or seven other lawyers came up. Believe it or not the reason I picked Larry is because he was the only one willing to talk to me without an appointment. I didn’t understand why a lawyer wouldn’t want a quick rundown of what you are looking for. It takes two minutes to listen and see if you are interested in representing me. Then I would make an appointment, come in, and go from there. Fortunately Larry had the same thought pattern as me and willingly spoke to me for about ten minutes. We made an appointment for the next day. I was in a very bad time bind. I had less than a week to try and win full custody of my niece. My brother passed away about 14 years ago when she was six years old of a brain aneurysm. I found out she was in a terrible situation. I’m not gonna go into details. She had to be removed from her bio mother‘s house immediately. Larry went above and beyond putting in emergency orders, asking for emergency court dates, hearings, motions, ect. He also went above and beyond doing things he wasn’t paid to do. He was on the phone with the Munster Indiana school system on a daily basis for about a week helping me get my niece registered. I cannot get her Registered without proof that I was her legal guardian. She had already missed two weeks of school while I was waiting for the judge and courts to go through the process. In the meantime Larry or his amazing secretary Stacy B. was either calling and talking to someone at the Munster high school, emailing, writing letters, verifying information, etc. They had to work miracles and jump through hoops for me to get my now adopted daughter registered in school. (Not that this is relevant to my review but trying to register a child in the Munster school system is ridiculous if the child isn’t your bio child. I had my niece living with me for years and had all the proof in the world. Since I was not her legal guardian Munster high school would not let me register her in school, even with bio mom’s permission! Even after Larry contacted them via email, phone, and chain mail, telling them/showing them proof I had a court date for guardianship and I was her legal caretaker and they still wouldn’t let me register her!) Larry got very upset at this point and filed for an emergency hearing and luckily we got it! A week later she was in school. I have already rambled a lot so I will wrap this up. Larry was very kind, considerate and caring. He went above and beyond what he was supposed to do, he made me feel very comfortable and answered all my questions. he promised he would get this done in a very short amount of time and from the first conversation until the judge granted me full guardianship it took less than two weeks. His prices are very reasonable. I can’t remember exactly how much I paid it was over $900 but under 1500for sure. I just want to add a year and a day from me receiving guardianship I legally adopted my niece and became a mother for the very first time. I still don’t feel comfortable saying that I’m a mom, but I love it until now. I had no children by choice. Thank you, Larry.

If you’re looking for a compassionate, helpful attorney- run the other way. Once I was 3 minutes late for a scheduled call and he refused to take my call. Prior to a court hearing (which I flew into Indiana to attend) he couldn’t meet to prep. Okay, I understand overlapping obligations could make meeting difficult but when I suggested a 15minute phone call instead, he oblected. The final straw came when toward the end of my divorce I owed him$500 and even after I give him thousands and had a pending settlement he refused to take any of my phone calls.

Pros
1
Keeps clients focused and realistic during the divorce process
“Larry did an excellent job on keeping me on task and explaining what was realistic and what was a waste of time and money at the start.”
2
Avoids unnecessary conflict and does not engage in unproductive battles
“During the process when opposing counsel sent countless emails on irrelevant items or false accusations, I wanted to battle with every email. Larry refused to get in the mud with opposing counsel and refused to waste my time and money on any items that were irrelevant to the process.”
3
Helps clients feel that the settlement was fair and that they went through the process in a "clean" manner
“A divorce can be dirty. However, with Larry as my attorney, I came through it feeling that the settlement was fair, the cost of legal representation was fair, and most of all with Larry's help, and I got through it feeling clean.”
4
Described as compassionate, helpful, and a good listener
“Mr. Stassin has represented me in family matters since 2006. His nonjudgmental and honest approach to the issues related to my situation was refreshing - my opinions of lawyers changed in a significant way as a result of my very positive experiences with Mr. Stassin.”
Cons

Mike and his team were very effective in handling our wrongful death case regarding my late father. My family and I had worked with Mike over the past few years on our lawsuit against multiple defendants including a large entity. He was very successful in taking thorough depositions, interviewing experts & witnesses, and reconstructing scenes/events surrounding the accident. My family and I had a very positive experience with Mike and a successful outcome that has helped to bring closure for a great loss we have endured. I highly recommend Mike and his law firm.

Mr. Polens business like manner and sticking to detail showed the jury clearly there's only one decision to make and that was in my favor. He was ready to answer any question I had in terms I understood . I can't thank him enough.

We were extremely fortunate to have retained the services of the Wruck Law Offices. We are so thankful with how the lawyers and staff handled our case. The folks at Wruck and Paupore were always pleasant and helpful in all their phone calls and letters. It was always a pleasure to get their calls. They explained things very well and made us feel valued and comfortable as we were going through the entire ordeal with our recovery from injuries from the incident which disrupted our lives against our will. We were especially pleased with their tenacious pursuit of the goal of full recovery which was far greater than we could have imagined. We were impressed with the short amount of time it took to settle the case (only a year and a half) which we were afraid would take much longer and involve lengthy court hearings. It was all done out of court and negotiated quickly. Yet we were able to get more than we would have had they had to go to court for us. What we had to go through with the losses, not only financially, but physically and emotionally that we sustained was made a lot more palatable having such a good law team walking through the journey with us. So, we say, thank you, thank you, thank you! to the Wruck Paupore law office! You all did a fantastic job and we will surely not be shy in talking about our high regards for your company. We recommend your practice to anyone your who need help with obtaining justice where justice is due.

I personally wouldn't use another attorney for criminal or DUI matters. I'm sure he's fantastic with all other matters as well. He proved to me that justice can be had in Lake county with a competent attorney. Thank you Marce and you are the greatest my friend.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dyer, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
