Pros
1
Excellent and responsive communication from the legal team, including prompt call-backs and updates on the case
“Jonathan and Mariah have been great! Very friendly and truly seem to care about my case! Very quick to respond and answer any questions I have!”
2
Affordable and flexible payment plans available to accommodate client budgets
“So I give Jonathan Harwell legal counsel a five star rating because for one it is a great legal service and he's done great work for me so far and also a huge thing right now is I've been struggling with money because I've had to switch jobs and my most recent job and drop my hours and with that said it's been a struggle and I've been a couple hundred dollars short almost every month but as long as I called him and told him what was going on they've always worked with me!”
3
Knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who fight hard for their clients
“Attorney Jonathan knows what he's doing. He knows the law and understands and respects the individual he's representing. Worth every dollar spent and more!”
4
Friendly, caring, and supportive staff who go above and beyond to assist clients
“Star, Jonathan, Janae, and Mariah are all so great. They always return calls promptly, answer all my questions, and are so nice.”
5
Successful case outcomes and dismissals, even for serious criminal charges
“With her guidance and hard work we were in the end able to get the case dismissed.”
Cons
1
Some clients experienced issues with lack of communication or responsiveness from the legal team
“I called around to several other firms, but no one got back to me as fast as they did. Their efficient and prompt communication gave us peace of mind that our case was a priority for them.”
2
A few clients felt that their attorney did not adequately prepare or advocate for them in court
“My attorney impressed me on several occasions. She had a good knowledge base of my case, even though at my hearing it had been a month since we spoke. She presented to the court exactly what we spoke about.”

This guy is why attorneys get a bad name !!!!! His staff will tell you one thing, then it never happens or it is a lie just to pacify you .I was told pay half now and the other half when the job was completed, but they have never completed the work yet and next month will be a year !!!!! I was told it would take 2 to 4 months. TOTAL SCAM !!!!!! They won’t call you back either !!!!!!

I was lied to constantly. I never once was able to speak with Mr. Lewis. I paid half which I was told I needed to paid in October 25, 2023 and the other half was to be paid when the expungement was completed. I made several calls to Mr.Lewis office always speaking to a Mark?? I was lied to constantly. First lie was the prosecutor was being replaced in Hamilton County so that was causing a hold up. I waited another month I called and lied to saying that my paperwork had been lost in the process. End of April I requested copies of court documents sent on my behalf. I received the PDF. Forms of documents to both counties I needed expungement from. Neither had been submitted to the court. And not signed by David Lewis. I have times and dates of every call and the PDF forms sent to me on May 1st. Never once during this time was I asked for balance to complete process. Not until July when I called Mark out as being a liar and this he admitted to everything. I asked for a refund he said it would be a couple days for the check to process. I called back to see if he could just refund my boyfriend’s CC. That’s when Mark informed me that he couldn’t give a refund I would have to pay the balance to get Mr. Lewis to move forward with this process. Of course I have been dealing with this for almost a year now. When I was first told it would take 3-4 months to complete. I didn’t want to give more money considering how much I had been lied to and never once had a chance to speak with Mr. Lewis. No matter how many times I ask. The office completely stopped answering my phone calls. Until one day Julie Brown answered I explained my dilemma. She is another attorney in this office. She said she would take notes and leave on Mr. Lewis desk but she doubts if I will get a return call. Mind you my cases were both minor both misdemeanors. I should have never been put through this stress. I would never have a kind word to say about what I was put through and never about Mr Lewis. He is a fraud to me. Robin McCaslin

Rebecca Gray is an absolutely fabulous attorney! She is responsive, attentive, and understanding. In a scary time, she will walk you through every possible outcome and option. She’ll break it down and guide you. We were able to win in court because she took the time to work the case with me, not just for me.

Alexander handled my expungement from start to finish. He was very thorough, up front and professional. Usually when you think of an attorney, it can feel like an inconvenience, he made this process seem like a breeze and was on it the whole time.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Indianapolis, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
