I had a great experience working with Truman law on a personal injury case. I worked closely with both Teresa and Mary. They were both professional, kind, understanding, and answered all my questions even after my case was settled. You could tell they really do care!!

Fantastic Law Firm! Nicest staff, and great advocates! Brooke is a go getter, and genuinely cares about each person that calls the firm. She's a pleasure to talk to and is abundantly helpful. Don't hesitate to call Karl Truman Law Office if you have a personal injury matter.

I am so impressed with the Karl Truman Law Office. Virginia was so helpful in getting me in touch with the firm’s investigator Shawn regarding my legal matter. Shawn was so helpful and directed me how to pursue a claim for my property damage from my accident.

I hired Niles based on a referral from a friend and I'm glad I did. He made an unpleasant situation bearable and easy to navigate. I hope I won't have to hire him again, but if a situation should arise, I would definitely choose Niles every time. I will also be recommending him to anyone who asks for a great lawyer in town

I hired Mr. Driskell for a case and I have been nothing but pleased with his work. I have always been able to get in contact with Mr. Driskell or his paralegal. Both are very friendly and knowledgeable of the criminal world. Hopefully I will not ever need him again but if I did he is the best criminal attorney in town.

I hired Benjamin K. Read to represent me in a court case, and I am beyond happy with the results and outcome of the whole case. His assistant called me to inform me of court dates, times, and costs and was very knowledgeable about any and everything I had questions about. His prices were not too bad compared to the other lawyers I had spoken with, which was a big deal to me because I didn't have tons of money to pay all at once. He allowed me to make payments to him, which most lawyers flat out just simply tell people they can not do this. He was very respectful throughout the entire process, and never judged me about my case whatsoever, and this meant a lot to me. Not once did I have to actually speak to a judge, he did all the work for me (which made me a lot less anxious and worried to come to court because talking to a judge can be scary, I don't care who you are)! To have someone that cares about his clients and represent them professionally and accordingly is the best thing someone going to court could ask for, and I am so pleased with the services he provided, which consisted of being able to get my felony charge dropped to a misdemeanor charge in such little amount of time! This was so huge of a deal to me, considering my record can and will have a big affect in jobs, my lifetime record, attending my children's school functions, and much more! Mr. Read's name and number is now saved in my phone for the future, whether it be myself needing his amazing skills in the court room again, or just to pass on for the next person in need of legal representation. I wouldn't want anyone else to be beside me in court, that's a fact. From beginning to end, he showed the upmost respect, compassion, and most importantly, his talent--and my freedom and record is proof! I definitely recommend Benjamin Read for anyone needing a great lawyer and I can bet you'll be just as satisfied as I was! Thanks so much to the office of Benjamin K. Read and Benjamin himself for doing an amazing job for me!

Ms. Blau was retained by my company in the matter of an employee's defense needs. She was knowledgeable, prompt and extremely effective in her dealings with the case. Her intimate knowledge of the Clark County court system brought about a very timely and favorable outcome in our legal matter. She was very "up to date" on the issues at hand and her communication throughout the process was thoughtful and direct.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Jeffersonville, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
