Ann Schwartz and her assistant Amanda Ponder did an Amazing job with our estate planning and preparing our wills. Ann also gave us a contact to help with an estate question that involved a different state. Start to finish it was extremely easy to get all the information necessary and in a timely manner very reasonable price for peace of mind. Thank You so much I highly recommend Alcorn Sage Schwartz and MaGrath.

Pros
1
Highly competent and experienced lawyers who are successful in winning cases
“Heidi Kendall-Sage was instrumental in getting my disability, she is courteous, thorough, professional the very best in her field.”
2
Lawyers who are compassionate and provide emotional support to clients
“Raeanne Pryor represented me in a family law/custody case and did absolutely amazing. She stood by for the entire time and was always a phone call... and then a phone call back away lol. Anytime I need an answer with not being sure about something in our agreement and sometimes just to listen to me vent bc it was a difficult case at times, she was always there and listened and gave feedback, whether it be emotional support or her expert opinions.”
3
Lawyers who are responsive and keep clients informed throughout the process
“Heidi and her colleague Patrick were instrumental in helping me toward a victorious outcome with a significant win in my trip and fall case. They did their best to get the highest possible award. Be patient, persevere, and trust these lawyers. You will not regret it.”
4
Friendly, professional, and welcoming office environment
“Friendly, helpful and always there when you need them.”
5
Lawyers who go above and beyond for their clients
“Heidi Kendall-Sage was amazing. She told me not to worry about anything. I still worried, but I had no reason. Heidi won my disability case in a matter of just a few minutes once we got my case before a judge.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness from the lawyers
“Something that could have been prevented by a phone call from Ann or anyone at her office. Instead of being responsible attorneys they relied on the postal service to deliver a form that we did not get and provided no back up calls or reminders that maybe we should so something.”
2
Unexpected and high legal fees
“First of all, Heidi tells you in the beginning that she charges 20%, so no surprise there. It should also be no suprise that you pay $750 to see her doctor (who is wonderful) as well if you don't have your own insurance/doctor.”

Devon Sharpe was my free, state appointed attorney in a case in which I was facing 19 1/2 years for something I did not do. We took it to trial and he brought in Jason Judd to help me also. They attacked that trial like I paid them $25,000. Devon treated me like a friend and fought for my life. 19 1/2 years is a long time in the state penitentiary. Needless to say we won. Not Guilty on all 4 counts. I am forever grateful and indebted to Devon and Jason fighting for me the way they did. Rockstar's in my opinion. My name is Kaine McKenzie if you want to look up the case. 5 stars all day!!!

He's a liar. He sent in papers to the judge saying my daughter agreed to joint custody and she absolutely did not. Now her son is with a meth head and she has no idea where he is because they would not provide her with an address.

The best thing I ever did was hire Jeff Flores as my representative in my case. He truly is a great layer that went beyond his call. I would recommend him to everyone. He was very professional and understanding. Believe me Covid 19 has made his job harder defending his clients I am sure. God bless you and your family Mr.Flores.

Going through this ordeal was very embarrassing and stressful for me, but Jeff made it an easier transition. At any point I had a question he quickly replied, and explained thoroughly the next step to prepare for. I would highly recommend Jeff to anyone that needed his professional help.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Madison, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
