I originally got Jon as a public defender and was amazed at how well he represented me. later on i needed a family lawyer again and Jon was the first lawyer in mind to call. Jon has been representing me for 2 years now and i cannot say anything bad of him.

We hired Jonathan a few years ago in a custody battle that was going nowhere with another attorney. From day one he was on top of things. He was able to wrap things up quickly and always keeping me informed. Jonathan cares and takes the time to help you. The staff was very helpful as well. I was very grateful for everything they did. Oh and if it matters he won the case too.

Jonathan has successfully represented our family through a very long and complex custody battle. His compassion for children and his wealth of case law knowledge has proven time and time again that we chose the correct council. We would highly recommend Jonathan!

Jon was awesome! He was very helpful and down to earth yet, responded to my calls, emails promptly. Most lawyers just want your money or to get the case resolved ASAP with little or no concern for your well being. Not Jon! He helped get more than I was seeking in mediation and kept us out of court. His staff is also very friendly and helpful! I highly recommend his services to anyone going through a divorce or legal separation.

I am a veteran! This can make it hard to handle claims for injuries. I was in a car accident 2 years ago. I am not from Indiana, but was traveling there when hit by a drunk driver. Therefore all my claims were made online. I never saw Todd in person, but he called and emailed me often. He always responded quickly! The claim process was hard, but Todd took care of it perfectly. He made sure the claim was processed and the VA was handled. Any outside care I needed he worked with them too. I had a payout and Todd handled the checks, medical records, talking to the insurance companies, and treated my case with absolute care. Despite how much I was going to receive I knew he would take care of my case. Whether I was paid out tons of money or only a fraction he made sure to handle it well and professionally. It’s important to have a lawyer even for the VA because they will want to be reimbursed. Many people don’t realize this but all medical expenses need to be accounted for even through the VA. A lawyer is important who knows how to work the VA system. During the claims and judicial process I understood what was happening and felt like the process was easy for me since Todd did it all. I recommend Todd! Especially if you handle most of your injuries through the VA, tricare, geico, or progressive. He handles your case even through the phone as if you were in his office. I have no complaints with his services. Thank you, Todd for all the help!

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Todd Barsumian, and it was an honor to work with him because I had no previous experience working with an attorney. I felt comfortable working with Todd for many reasons. I was not in a good place when I contacted him, however, I knew that there were important things that I needed to take care of. He responded to all my questions and concerns in a timely manner and asked me questions to make sure we were on the same page. I really liked the fact that he explained things to me that I did not fully understand. And lastly, I appreciated his kindness and patience.

I have partnered with Todd on cases for over decade. He is an outside the box thinker and not afraid to take on hard cases and battle for his clients. He is also just an amazing human. He truly cares about his clients and finding Justice for them.

I can’t imagine choosing him as your attorney could possibly be a mistake. He handled my entire case with little to no effort on my part. Explained everything to me until he was certain I understood. Never once made me feel ashamed for needing to seek his legal representation. Ps, I didn’t actually meet him until day of court. I’m from out of state and had a pressing time line. Above and beyond service. Worth every penny. I’d give more stars if I could. Simply put-some are trained, some have a niche. Mr Mastison seems to have a niche! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newburgh, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
