I am both a client and a colleague of Chris'. I have referred him to numerous clients from my financial planning business and they have all had nothing, but good things to say about their experiences - even the few who decided not to go through their Estate Planning with Chris. I take my business very seriously and I am very careful with who I send my clients to; Chris is reliable, professional, and thorough in his approach, so I am always confident in referring him. Finally, I am also a client of Chris! He has walked me and my wife through our Estate Planning and we both feel so much better about our future. Even though we are young, Chris crafted an Estate Plan that fits our needs and one that will grow with us through his constant attention to it and through our regular meetings. I am so happy to have Chris as my Estate Planning Attorney, both as someone I can refer and someone I can count on if something were to happen to me.

We did the side line to side line with Chris in developing our trust. He keeps in contact with us each year and makes sure everything is updated. We feel confident with him. He helps us and offers work shops for us to attend.

My wife and I came to Chris to set up our trusts to guarantee our wishes are carried out when the time comes. He took the time to fully explain trusts, the need for trusts, and the process in great detail. We appreciated his openness and straight talk. Chris and his team are thorough and accurate. Everything happened just as explained to us and anticipated. There were no surprises. If you are considering a trust, an estate plan, or just have questions about these, I strongly urge you to consider Chris for these services.

Chris has been wonderful in helping my husband and I plan for our future. We are a very young family, and some of the topics we have discussed are things that my husband and I hadn't really thought about, but are very important to consider. Chris has been very informative and educational, especially since this is the first time we are learning about some of the legal documents and terms. I feel much more confident knowing that our medical care, kids, and finances will be taken care of according to our wishes should the worst happen to my husband or me.

The best thing about Chris is he takes the time to get to know you, your situation, and your needs. We have had estate plans before, but not one lawyer or firm actually listed the assets that needed to have ownership changed and then provide necessary paperwork. Chris' firm did. Chris even actually handled some of the re-titling himself. And they don't stop there. They help you to complete all the necessary steps to put your plan into effect the way it was agreed upon. The follow through is excellent. It is also part of his practice to stay in touch every year and review documents/ changing circumstances, etc. He offers a very comprehensive estate planning program. We would highly recommend him and his firm.

I worked with Brian on the acquisition of our company by an overseas company. The negotiation on the sale/purchase agreement was fairly drawn out, and Brian gave excellent advice to us on the details of the agreement to make sure the deal ended up being favorable for us. Brian has also advised us on many other matters including employee and contractor agreements, compliance with securities laws, supplier agreements, basically on all legal matters that most companies face. We found Brian's legal advice to be well-thought out and pragmatic. We also really appreciate that he writes contracts in a more practical way than most attorneys, using more straight-forward language and structuring rather than traditional legal jargon.

Mr Blatt put together prenuptial agreements for my wife and I, as well as wills, living wills and powers of attorney. In addition, he created a trust for our property. He is organized, professional, and was able to clearly explain the process and purpose of all the documents. I thoroughly recommend his services.

Aladean gives her all. She is the ONLY attorney that has ever given me a refund on a retainer. She also ALWAYS gets the job done, to total satisfaction, when she works for you ... she has for me. She has handled several types of cases for me. To me, SHE IS THE BEST!!!! She has handled business things for me, family matters where my son was beaten up by a man, for no reason and she also handled a copyright suit for me.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of South Bend, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
