He helped me with the areas I needed. We did not have to go to trial and settled out of court, with the amount that I requested. He also came to my location as I needed him to, which was great. Really nice guy that was personally involved. I would recommend him for a personal injury case.

Megan is such a hard working prosecutor ! She represents my children (child support) case in court since 2015. She has been so helpful in tracking down my ex husband and getting my children their child support that they deserved . I am so thankful that the court assigned Megan to my case .

I moved back from overseas with my daughter to fight for custody for my child. Caitlin and her team were wonderful in every aspect. She faught for us when I didn’t know what to do. She constantly stayed in contact with me throughout the process, went above and beyond in research and dedication to my case, truly making me feel like her family. She was extremely knowledgeable in every aspect of her job. She helped settle our case to my liking and when I asked for it to be reopened about a year later; Caitlin was right there. If I needed her now, I know she would only be a phone call away. I truly could not have it without her. She saved my family.

2015 I was a single mom going through a horrific divorce . I wasn’t getting anywhere with my previous lawyer and fired that non experienced lawyer and contacted Hunt Hassler Miller law firm. I spoke with a nice paralegal named Jolyn. She gave a brief description of each lawyer in office . Caitlin Miller description stood out to me. She explained kindly Caitlin’s protocols and I knew she would be the one I would want to interview for my case . After meeting with Caitlin, I instantly hired her . She was so understanding and I could tell she personally cared about my situation and most importantly that office treated me like family. She is very detailed , thorough , and she listens . She knew how important my kids meant to me and keeping them safe . She did exactly that! She kept us safe ! She even seen me struggled financially through out the few years and bought diapers and wipes for my 3 kids . Her office set up payment arrangements with me which was a great help! She was such a blessing to my family! Especially when the father of my children stepped out of their lives , she stepped into our lives ! Couple years later , I am remarried and we have hired Caitlin again for our adoption case ! Again, her services have been outstanding. She has offered advice , emotional support and has been there to answer any questions we have had . I give this lawyer 10+ stars ! #CAITLINMILLER #1

Caitlin is representing me in my divorce. She is very professional, thorough and has worked hard to achieve a fair outcome for me. She has been terrific to work with and worth every penny I've been billed. Billing practices are straight-forward, no-nonsense and unhyped. I highly recommend her and her law firm. Support staff are also superior and efficient and easy to get along with.

Represented me for a reckless driving case in Vermillion County. I live in Illinois so it was tough to find a local lawyer without online reviews to lean on but he was a good find. He seemed to be very busy but did an excellent job representing me. At the end of it all the case was dismissed. Couldn't be happier!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Terre Haute, Indiana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
