First experience with a Law Firm! I was so impressed by the honesty transparency and patience with Laura S. This 3 year trek was stressful but we worked together quite well. Tom F took over for a time and he was just as awesome. We just settled and I’m very happy with the result. Dont hesitate to contact RSH!!

I was displeased with the lack of preservation of evidence. I was displeased with paying almost $400 per hour only to get blitzed 24 hours before an appeal deadline. Had I not reviewed it, the officers assault on me would have been severely downplayed in words by Ray. That really has got me upset.

I had the pleasure of working with Ray Scheetz on my green card application, and I can’t recommend him highly enough! From start to finish, Ray demonstrated exceptional expertise in immigration law. He was always approachable, patient, and thorough in explaining every step of the process, which made the entire experience stress-free. Ray’s attention to detail and commitment to my case were truly impressive. His communication skills are top-notch; he was always quick to respond to my questions and provided clear, concise answers that put me at ease. If you’re looking for a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and dedicated attorney to help with immigration matters, Ray Scheetz is the one to go to. Thanks to his hard work, I am now a proud green card holder, and I am incredibly grateful for his assistance.

I had a very complicated situation and Justin was amazing throughout the entire process. He made sure that I understood all of my options, and always answered my questions quickly, even outside of his normal hours. I hope I don’t ever need his services again, but if I do, I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out.

I google searched when I needed a lawyer and Arenson Law Group came up. I started reading the testimonials - I kept reading about Justin and the wonderful job he did for his clients. So, I decided I also needed him to represent me during my divorce and I am extremely happy he was available. I would recommend him to anyone, he was professional, kind, easy to talk to and work with.

My attorney took over my case after another lawyer would not keep me well informed or respond to matters concerning my case. Mr. Collins would respond as soon as he had any new information to offer--or he would answer e-mails or questions at any time. I felt like he had a good short- and long-term strategy for how best to handle my case, and he shared this information candidly with me. I always felt like it was the other attorney who held things up--never Mr. Collins. He respected attorney-client privilege 100 percent. As he referred to other, similar cases to mine, he would never use names or identifying information. I know if he refers to my case, he will do the same. He was always ethical in his suggestions in how he (we) should proceed with a certain motion or idea to move the case forward. Mr. Collins is kind, sympathetic, and at all times professional. Even though he's handled many cases similar to mine, he never made it sound routine. He spends the time with his client discussing ways to reach the shared goal, never to overly engage in small talk or make the client wait. He never arrived at a meeting with me unready to dive in and get the work done. Mr. Collins did all the work in my case. Only when it was necessary did he ask me to find a document or do anything other than meet and talk with him. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Mr. Collins as an excellent, ethical, and professional attorney.

Working to get the custody of my son. I had tried two others attorneys before in family issues, but Mr. Fisher is for sure the best and most ethical one. He explained to me clearly how strong my case really was, with all the pros and cons if we went one way or another. We tried to go to arbitration, as it’s required by law first in Iowa, but we had to change the mediator because it was handpicked by the opposing party. His legal assistant is also very kind, knows her job well, and it’s always kind and courteous in all matters. I don’t know much about the rest of the law firm, I imagine it’s also good and ethical too, but I can say that with attorney Fisher, he knows how to handle legal matters very well and is also very time efficient. He’s not the cheapest attorney in CR, but he’s also very reasonable. At the end, you get what you pay for.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cedar Rapids, Iowa?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
