Without hesitation, partner up with David Cmelik. David represented me for DUI case. A first offense, not to be repeated. From our initial contact (without meeting), extremely competent, comforting while disarming any of my numerous fears. Immediately. Never needing to select an attorney for DUI, not knowing/understanding the law and process in Iowa, David walked me through all the steps. David advisee what to expect, detailing the necessary actions required to complete the process with success. My case had complexities. David has all the contacts, skill and expertise of Iowa Law in his county, througout the state. Hand holding along the way, I was informed what to expect. Best yet, he was honest about all the possible outcomes and associated risks should I be late in reply or fail to follow closely the instructions from the court. Learned of the verdict today. MY case and outcome was fair, (very fair) from the court due to David's skill. Working with David for 2 months easily became our team effort. This takes two! Clearly explaining the "areas of nuances" gave me clarity, relieving all fear (which I had many). The pricing was extremely fair. Imvoicing for services provided were detailed and on time. David knowing personally the prosecuting attornies in the area, the judge (presenting countless cases). I needed an expert. David's guidance and expertise with Iowa DOT was also a service I needed. This is a must. Without any doubt or hesistation, my review is sincere. I highly suggest to partner up with David. There are no other choice. Lastly, David thank you.

After making the mistake of driving while intoxicated, along with some other missteps and getting arrested, rightfully so, I had the fortune of stumbling across David A. Cmelik Law PLC. I saw the glowing google reviews and contacted him. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and gave me more of his time than I thought I warranted. He talked to me for an hour before we made any sort of professional agreement, teaching me about the ins and outs of dealing with an OWI, the way the Lynn county legal system operates and even some history on how the system got to be the way that it was. It was tremendously helpful and I knew that I had the right man to represent me after my consultation. You will be hard pressed to find anyone with his level of mastery and he's incredibly generous with his pricing. He's intensely thorough with all the necessary case information and he keeps you well informed throughout the process. I was exceptionally pleased with his work and the results of my trial. I cannot possibly recommend his services to anyone dealing with legal issues enough. If you or someone you know need genuine, expert legal representation, call David A. Cmelik. I promise you, you will not regret it!

I needed help with a Social Security claim. Rob Legislador handled this case with class and treated me very politely. Other 2 yrs, and don’t really remember him ever changing any scheduled meetings, and never gave me the impression he needed to get going somewhere else. It was a long winded process as he said they usually are. But at the end of it all, Rob got the job done to my satisfaction. Thanks Rob.

I was in a severe motor vehicle accident. Initially I was working with a family attorney to recover damages, and due to conflicting views I needed to find new representation. Than I found Tony! I felt we were more on the same page about how I wanted my case to continue. I had been through a lot physically with multiple broken bones and life lasting damages. I didn't want to settle for just a low offer because my damages were substantial but I also wanted a resolution so I could move forward with my life. When I met Tony I told him this and he genuinely seemed to care and understood my position of how I had been through a lot and just wanted a fair deal so I could move forward with my life. Within days/weeks of signing up with Tony Olson I was getting the communication and updates I wanted. I felt that my case was being push to the top of the defense teams pile. After a few months went by I'm glad to say both sides were able to come to an agreement. It was more than fair and even more than I could have asked for! If your looking for an attorney I would highly recommend Tony Olson. Personally I just felt better that somebody listened to my input! Thanks Tony!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cedar Rapids, Iowa?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
