Absolutely worthless! Unorganized! Dropped us before the end of the divorce! Stole my $7,500. Don't waste your money!

Alicia was absolutely amazing from the initial meeting through the trial. She was professional, persistent and poised in the moments leading up to the trial as well as continuing to care for me and keep me as calm as one can be before going into the court room. She will forever be my number one choice for a Lawyer.

I was going through a difficult divorce and Alicia took my case, after another lawyer was just saying what I wanted to hear, writing letters, and taking my money. I am a Father of two children, and my X-Wife was trying to limit me to minimal visitation. Alicia took charge, fought for me and my children, and did exactly what she said she would do. She is professional, diligent, knows the law, and will fight like a bulldog as your attorney. Alicia is a tough, compassionate professional that will tell you the truth about your case, and she will work as if it was her butt on the line. What did my case involve? I was going through a tough divorce, with two young children. My now X-Wife was fired from her employment due to affair within company. My X, who was making equal money at time, was trying to play the system, by not looking for gainful employment till after court proceedings to get the most possible support out of me. I was being painted as a distant Father, who didn't even understand what my children ate for breakfast. She was trying to force me to be an every other weekend Father, and limit any future decisions with my children. With the help of Alicia I was able to garner full 50-50 joint physical custody with my two, and fair equitable terms on support. During the process Alicia laid out what she felt I was entitled to under the law. She listened to my wants and needs. After hearing me, she laid out the possible traps of some of my ideas long term, and we came up with a game plan to fight for my goals. If you are ever in the position of needing an attorney for a divorce, I can't think of a better professional. I would recommend her 100% to any of my friends or family if they were ever in need of her services.

Attorney Gieck handled my divorce and child custody matter. She explained everything regarding the process in a clear and concise manner. She prepared all documents timely and provided me copies of all documents, including the file-stamped copies of all pertinent pleadings. She worked diligently for me to make sure I received the amount of child support that the guidelines provided for me and reigned me in when I was being unreasonable in my requests. Overall the entire process flowed seamlessly and I was EXTREMELY satisfied with the results. I had to contact her after my son graduated high school to verify what my son's father was reasonable for with respect to his college education. She was extremely helpful. Alicia Gieck is down-to-earth yet always professional. She is well versed in all aspect of divorce and child custody matter. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone who is in need of these services.

Carrie recently helped us with two real estate closings. Carrie and her assistant kept us informed about what was needed and took care of all the scheduling. The helped resolve all of the "hiccups" and made sure we stayed calm. She did a great job and I'd recommend her!

I met Carrie in 1999. She was my ex-husband's attorney. She helped him get custody of my daughter away from me. After that I knew she was good. If she could get my daughter away from me after I fought tooth and nail to keep her that's all I needed to know. In 2003 I needed an attorney so, I called Carrie's office. She was surprised to see me. She asked me if it was in regards to my ex-husband because that would be a conflict of interest. I said no. Right after that my current husband passed away. Carrie was both compassionate and professional. She was sympathetic and helped me through this tragic time. I have never forgotten it. I refer everyone who asks me about an attorney to her.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Davenport, Iowa?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
