Stephen Fieweger is amazing! He won my case in less than 2 months. My old lawyer took 2 years. He was so easy to work with. I am eternally grateful to have such a great person on my side. He always returned calls and answered any questions. He worked very hard on my case and knew exactly what he was doing.

Mr. Fieweger was highly recommended to me. I was not disappointed. He was well versed, communicated effectively, and was able to resolve my issue fairly. His charming and quirky secretary's warmth and kindness will not soon be forgotten. I hope to never need another lawyer, but if I do I will definitely choose him again.

I hired this Attorney when he was with a large Firm in Illinois, and again when he was on his own in Iowa. I will blame myself for expecting him to provide better service the 2nd time. Fieweger failed to submit my first EEO Case to IL Federal District Court in a timely manner (in 2017), and my case was dismissed with prejudice in 2018. He was suspended in 2018 and handed my 2 EEO Cases off to another attorney, who had no experience with Employment Law (unbeknownst to me). I demanded that the other Attorney be removed, but neither the other Counsel nor Fieweger took any action, until Fieweger's 6-month suspension had ended. Fieweger was also representing me in a Federal, quasi-judicial forum, the Merit Systems Protection Board, as I was terminated from Federal Employment in late 2017. He recommended that I not use "Reliance on Counsel" as an affirmative defense, so that he could get out of testifying. The judge ruled that I could not have reasonably believed that I was honest during an Employment Investigation (Lack of Candor), although I consulted with Fieweger prior to answering Federal Employment questionnaires and took his advice to heart. Fieweger even wrote a letter, stating that he had advised me to answer the questionnaires as I had answered them, and then he recommended that we change course (after I was fired and during the Discovery process). Unfortunately, suing him for malpractice is not a viable option, due to Illinois' statute of limitations, burden of proof (case within a case), etc. In years past, I referred multiple coworkers to him, and I am truly sorry that I did. I asked the Illinois Attorney Disciplinary and Registration Commission to investigate his behavior. They claim they did, but did not refer the case to a Disciplinary Board. Give this attorney a WIDE berth! Stay away!

When I hired him, I had already worked my case pro se for 2 years and I was just about to get released from prison and I had a lot on my plate so I decided to hire a lawyer. I've had him for a year now and I can't even tell you what he did! The only thing I know he did, which I could have done, was send in our answers for summary judgment on exhaustion. Of course it was a home run but not because of what he did but because of what the defendants didn't do! "They had no foundation." "They contradict themselves." Etc.. He never called me one time in a year! Not once!!! And I had to do my interrogatories all by myself and since he works really far from me, it was really hard to meet and talk. He is the only one who works at his firm, besides his paralegal/ secretary and it is very difficult to call him!

Jennie was incredibly easy to work with. She has a very expansive knowledge base in regards to financials statements and ensuring you receive a fair settlement. She was professional, compassionate, trustworthy and assertive. I am very happy she was on my side! Going forward, should I need representation, I will not hesitate to call Jennie. Extremely satisfied with the outcome of my divorce settlement.

My divorce and custody battle was one of the most drawn out, stressful processes because of some very large issues that occurred with my ex-husband. Jennie studied my case and knew my history and story inside out and backwards. She answered every question and took every issue very seriously. She worked tirelessly for me and the best interest of my daughter. She was the calm in the storm for me. Her level of integrity is outstanding. Jennie keeps things very real with you at all times and wants to make sure you are prepared for any outcome, but she will fight for you every step of the way. If I ever need an attorney for anything again, Jennie will be my first call. I truly would not recommend anyone else.

Mr. Dane did an extremely thorough job explaining our options during bankruptcy proceedings, as well as advising on a secondary suit. He worked with us with extreme flexibility, along with open communication, and took the time to explain, and made sure we were well informed and prepared. We were very impressed with Mr. Danes honestly and realistic legal counsel as it was detrimental to decisions made with our filings. We would highly recommended retaining Mr. Dane for counsel.

Went to see our lawyer to ask some questions related to some health concerns and what options we have. He gave us some ideas to pursue before we get to a point that we would have to scramble. Very productive to meet. Very nice office that gave us a comfortable feeling

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Davenport, Iowa?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
